Coronavirus: WHO Confirms 25,320 Cases, 1225 Deaths In Africa

The World Health Organization (WHO) African Region has disclosed that there are 25,320 coronavirus cases and 1225 deaths in the Continent, as of Thursday, 23, April.

“Number of coronavirus cases in the @WHO African Region have increased by 43% in the past week, while there has been a 38% increase in the number of deaths reported,” WHO African Region tweeted.

The regional health agency also said that South Africa, Algeria, Cameroon, Ghana, Cote d’Ivoire and Guinea were currently the most affected, accounting for 66 percent of the number of cases in the Continent.

Meanwhile, it added that there have been about Coronavirus 6,700 recoveries.

It also said that many African nations do not have adequate health materials and facilities to contain the pandemic, particularly in rural areas.

Africa, is one of the continents with the least Coronavirus case, as confirmed by WHO’s Director-General, Tedros Adhanom.

However, In another news, ECOWAS leaders have appointed President Muhammadu Buhari as the head of the COVID-19 response, in the region.

This was made known by the President’s Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Femi Adesina, who explained that the appointment took place at the Extraordinary ECOWAS Summit on COVID-19 which was held via teleconferencing.

The meeting was presided over by the President of the Republic of Niger and Chair of the ECOWAS Authority of Heads of State and Government, Mahamadou Issoufou.
