COVID-19: Health Commissioner Promises Support For PHC Workers

The Enugu State Commissioner for Health, Prof. Ikechukwu Obi, has assured Primary Health Care (PHC) workers of continual support and supplies of medical consumables as part of measures by the state in its fight against coronavirus.

Obi gave the assurance in Enugu at a one-day training, tagged “train-the-trainers programme, organized for PHC Coordinators in the 17 council areas of the state at the weekend.

The training, which was put together by the State Primary Health Care Development Agency (ENS-PHCDA) centered on “Preparedness and response on COVID-19 at PHC centers and community level.

According to the commissioner, the ministry would always support front line health workers at the PHC centers and rural areas to provide quality healthcare for residents in rural areas.

He commended the determination of PHC workers in rural areas towards ensuring that healthcare is continually delivered in the face of some inadequacies.

“The PHC centers and workers will definitely get all the necessary support it requires; while I remain on this seat as the State Commissioner for Health”

“We will ensure that nobody is left out anywhere in the state as it concerns qualitative healthcare for all residents of Enugu State,’’ he said.

In another news, As Nigeria continues to record daily surge in the number of coronavirus, COVID-19 cases due to community transmission of the virus, the Enugu State Primary Health Care Development Agency has expressed its readiness to tackle the spread of the virus across communities in the state.

The Executive secretary, Enugu State PHCDA, Dr.George Ugwu in an interview, said that with more than 50% of current COVID-19 cases no longer from people who travelled but as a result of community transmission, primary health care systems across the country have had to double their efforts at containing the spread.

He explained that in the bid to tackle the virus, the National PHCDA held several meetings and came up with what it termed response and preparedness to COVID-19 at the primary health care and community level.
