One word that most explains Steve Crown Okolo’s entry into the music industry is explosion.

His debut track “You are Great” turned out to be a hit and remained in the public consciousness long after the release. Who is Steve Crown? How much of the artiste do you know? Here are five facts about the Abuja-born Benue State-origin star.

1. Steve Crown needs a wife to protect him from the myriads of distractions

Not now. Take a deep breath. Relax. But in the long term, the artiste told Sun Newspaper that he would eventually settle down. As a minister, he needs a wife to stand between him and female attention, which he admitted could have been a problem if not for the Grace of God.

The law diploma holder and graduate of Federal Polytechnic Kora Na Moda, Zamfara State made this comments in 2016. More than three years on, perhaps the long term is here and we might hear something soon. We might not. Only Steve knowest.

2. Steve Crown owns Lake Light Entertainment Music Label

So many sing but few can effectively manage the business of singing. Steve fits the profile of a singer and businessman. Many will start from other artiste’s record label. Not Steve. His debut hit “You are Great” was produced, recorded and filmed under his imprint with the aid of 4nyMoni Enter10ment. The singer had retained this collaboration in his other songs including “Imela”, “We Wait on You” and “El Shadai”.

Under his imprint, Steve has worked to unveil newer artists because his vision for Lake Light is “to discover talents, listen and help create a platform that will help them create a positive impact on the society.”
The most notable name Steve is working with is Gloria Ngozi Nwanebo, a Belgium-based England-born Nigerian student, and daughter of his mentor, Pastor Mike Nwanegbo.

“Most of the young people who are talented are left without a platform to express themselves. We really have not done much of empowerment for the young people, especially Christian youth,” Ngozi told Vanguard Newspaper. It is for this that Steve is in the business and she is fortunate to have him working with her towards gospel fulfillment.

3. The artiste is a white man

No, he is not, as many first thought when they heard the depth of his lyrics and the phonetics of his melody. On the contrary, he is a Nigerian through and through. Fashion-wise, he identifies with white. “I love white because it’s heavenly,” he told Vanguard’s Sam Eyoboka in an interview in late 2017. “White is mature, it’s acceptable, it’s pure and modest. White brightens up every situation.”

If you have seen his music videos, you will understand his sentimental words for white. White is his de facto uniform in his videos.

4. Steve Crown aspires to speak in foreign tongues

He has sang hit songs, he owns his own studio and record label, he inspires a generation and provides a platform for upcoming artistes, but Mr. Okolo is not done yet. He aspires to sing in other languages. He has sang in English, in Igbo, in Hausa. He wants to go beyond the shores of Nigeria. “I just want to reach out to a lot of people in their languages,” he said to Vanguard. “I do hope to do songs in Spanish, French and any other language because my goal is just to spread God’s love to people and let them know about his sovereignty.”

For God. Steve Crown is that kind of gospel musician. He mentioned that his inspirations for the lyrics and music of his songs come from the Holy Spirit. Little wonder that his motivation is God-centric.

5. He sowed his first earning to God

In an era when giving to the church is under serious scrutiny and pastors’ perception seems to be at all-time low, there are still people who are undaunted by what looks like a united public outrage against giving to the pulpit. Steve Crown is not moved by this. When he made his first money, he didn’t use a kobo of it for himself. He sowed all in the ministry.

How? Where? What church? We don’t have information in this regard because the artiste won’t disclose it. “I am not going to talk about it,” he told Christy Anyanwu of Sun Newspaper. Because “everybody has bought a whistle,” he added amidst laughter.

Steve Crown’s talent. Steve Crown’s first income. Steve Crown sows it to the church. His talent, his money, his decision.
