COVID-19: Anambra Govt Assist Hospitals With Free Oxygen

Governor of Anambra State, Willie Obiano has ordered that general hospitals in Anambra State be provided with free oxygen for use in their intensive care units..

A statement signed by the Managing Director of Anambra State Oxygen Production Plant, Dr. Onyekachukwu Ibezim, said the move is in line with Gov. Willie Obiano strategies to stimulate business activities and ameliorate patients’ sufferings during the pandemic.

According to the governor, the order covers all primary and secondary healthcare centres in Anambra State. Interested hospitals are requested to apply to Commissioner for Health of Anambra State.

“Gov. Willie Obiano has directed that in line with the State’s response to the COVID-19 pandemic, all General hospitals and Primary health care centres in the State who need Medical Oxygen should apply immediately through the office of the Honorable Commissioner for Health for onward collection free from the Anambra State Oxygen Production Plant, Amaku, Awka for two months with effect from Wednesday, May 27, 2020,” the statement reads.

Recently, Anambra State recorded two deaths at Ufuma and Onitsha and 10 confirmed cases arising from the COVID-19 pandemic, amid denial by the state government, describing the cases as controversial.

According to reports, one of the cases is a 66-year old man who was among the 10 confirmed cases so far recorded in the state, while the other case was said to have contracted it from the partner who died undetected until test confirmed the deceased’ status.

However, Governor Willie Obiano, in a statewide broadcast said the state has only one case out of the 10 cases confirmed by the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC), adding that the victim did not report to the health centre on time.

He said it was important to explain that the only COVID-19 death recorded so far in the state was a 66-year old man who did not report his ill-health on time, adding, “The case was reported late to the hospital and by the time his result came back positive, 24 hours later, he had died.
