Politics Of NAUTH Nnewi CMD Position: Prof. Obi Nwosu Speaks

As the tenure of the incumbent Chief Medical Director (CMD) of Nnamdi Azikiwe University Teaching Hospital (NAUTH) Nnewi, Professor Anthony Igwegbe begins to come to an end, the question who becomes his replacement is on the lips of many.

Prof. Bertrand Obi Nwosu, Professor of Obstetrics & Gynaecology at Nnamdi Azikiwe Teaching Hospital, Nnewi, has said that competence should be the primary criteria of choosing who becomes the next Chief Medical Director (CMD) of Nnamdi Azikiwe University Teaching Hospital (NAUTH), Nnewi.

Speaking to our correspondent, Prof. Nwosu, who has written over 100 Medical Publications, admitted that in other to move the hospital forward and to ensure the hospital moves to it’s the permanent site, a competent person who understands management needs to be chosen as the CMD of the hospital.

Asked if he is interested in the CMD position, he revealed that he is no longer interested in vying for the position after he lost the position Nine (9) years ago.

Speaking he said, “I am not ready to play the politics of CMD appointment, what they play is pure politics”

He revealed that his name was submitted to be given the appointment after the screening when he contested 9 years but was removed after some power plays.

Prof. Obi Nwosu who was the Former Anambra State Chairman of Nigeria Medical Association (NMA), admitted that if the federal government considers and offers him the position, he won’t hesitate to accept.

However, according to a reliable source, the Federal Ministry of Health already has criteria that anybody who wants to become the CMD must meet. They judge based on the criteria. Apart from the judgment they make by Curriculum Vitae, they also judge based on qualifications, any additional management training, publications and contributions to scientific knowledge, contributions to the teaching hospital, as well as the Candidate’s vision and mission for the hospital.

It was further disclosed that in the written exams for the CMD position, Candidates are asked professional questions, knowledge of Public Sector Rules and Financial Regulations and General knowledge. The exams take 60 % covering professional paper – 30%, Public Service Rules- 20% and General Paper- 10%.
