Dr. Joseph Ugboaja the Chairman Medical Advisory Committee, Nnamdi Azikiwe University Teaching Hospital(NAUTH), Nnewi has expressed profound commendation on the ability of the hospital staff to conduct impactful Covid-19 step-down training among themselves.

At the outbreak of the pandemic, the hospital management conducted a series of training for the staff to further educate them on safety, preventive and response measures to enable them to serve the public better. It is with good faith that the staff of the hospital has continued to conduct step-down training in small and large scale to further drive home and prepare every director, unit head, general staff to serve the public better.

As a supporter of good deeds, Dr. Ugboaja attended the training session organized by the director medical lab scientist Dr. Theodora Eze for ALL staff in the medical lab science department which commenced on Monday 22nd June 2020 and scheduled to run till Friday 26th June 2020. This was done in his characteristic manner of encouraging and supporting staff that showed exceptional characteristics.

 

The event started with an opening prayer, a brief introduction of facilitators before the training commenced. The training and sensitization was filled with insight on safety precautions and what to do when all resorts fail. The training moderator, Dr. Dorothy Egwuna advised the participants to stop work if it does not provide them with adequate safety materials, protective equipment, and anything they require to ensure their safety.

Commencing her training on hand washing best practices, Dr. Obiageli Wilfred Onwurah presented a 15 minutes paper on the acceptable methods of washing hands and using an alcohol-based sanitizer. She further brought in some equipments to drive home a practical approach on the best practices for hand washing.

In her presentation, she enumerated the 7 steps of handwashing as follows

1. Wet your hands with clean, running water (warm or cold), turn off the tap, and pour soap.

2. Lather your hands by rubbing them together with the soap.

3. Lather the backs of your hands, between your fingers, and under your nails on your palm

4. Scrub your hands for at least 20 seconds by interlocking each finger against the other

5. Wash your thumb extensively, wash the wrist extensively too

6. Rinse your hands well under clean, running water.

7. Dry your hands using a disposable paper or air dry them.

Repeat the same process for applying hand sanitizers.

Some participants were called to practice and they were glad at the knowledge they acquired at the training. The training continued with further training from seasoned facilitators.

To maintain physical distancing, a limited number of persons were into the hall per time, this resulted in spreading the session in batches. This will continue till Friday to accommodate all staff at the medical laboratory science department. The department has been blessed with a plethora of facilitators including Dr. Anuli Agbasi who will be speaking subsequently.

This training is important because, health workers are opinion leaders, equipping them with the right information and opinion will help the society fight the pandemic.
