Tutor Remanded Over Alleged Rape Of Student

A 42-year-old teacher, Eronse Balat, was on Tuesday, remanded by an Ile-Ife Magistrates’ Court in Osun State over alleged rape of his student.

Inspector Abdullahi Emmanuel, The Prosecutor, told the court that the defendant committed the offence on June 11, at about 7 am at Eleyele area, Ile-Ife.

Emmanuel disclosed that the defendant had carnal knowledge of the 23-year-old girl (name withheld).

According to him, the defendant unlawfully and indecently assaulted his student. The rape committed by the teacher against his student contravened sections 358 and 360 of the Criminal Code, Laws of Osun, 2002.

The defendant, however, pleaded not guilty to the two-count charge of rape and assault.

Magistrate A.A. Ayeni ordered for his remand at Ilesa Correctional centre. Ayeni adjourned the case until July 28, for hearing.

Anaedoonline.com reported that A 54-year-old Pastor has been arrested in Ogun state for allegedly raping a 12-year-old girl (name withheld).

The Pastor identified as Niyi Omowodun was arrested following a complaint by father of the victim who reported at Itele Divisional headquarters in Ota that, while he was at work, he received a call from one of his neighbors that his daughter had been sexually abused by the suspect and that the said neighbor caught the man in the act.

Upon receiving the report, the Divisional Police Officer of Itele Division, Monday Unuigbe, detailed his detectives found and arrested the man.

On interrogation, the suspect, who claimed to be a pastor at Helmet of Life International Church, confessed to raping the girl, stating that he lured the girl into an incomplete building in the area when the girl was going on an errand. When asked whether he has no wife, the suspect explained that he had been separated from his wife since 2016.

The Commissioner of Police, Kenneth Ebrimson, has ordered the transfer of the suspect to anti-human trafficking and child labour unit of the State Criminal Investigation and Intelligence Department for further investigation and prosecution.
