The Senate on Tuesday passed a bill to give legal backing to the already established Nigerian Army University, Biu, Borno State.

Hate Speech Bill

The passage of the bill followed the consideration of the report of the Senate Committee on Army.

Chairman of the Committee, Senator Ali Ndume (Borno South) in his presentation, said the committee, took into consideration “areas that are in conflict with other extant laws, those that have security implication and those that are ambiguous.”

According to the lawmaker, when the Bill is passed into law, the University “would promote research and other means of advancement of knowledge and its application to military hardware and software, social, cultural, economic, scientific, and technological situations.”

He stated the institution would cater for the development of middle and high-level manpower in the area of technological empowerment for civilians, appreciation of military policies, logistic and strategies.

In another news, the Nigerian Senate on Tuesday asked the country’s service chiefs to step aside as a result of the rising insecurity in the country.

The resolution of the upper legislative chamber followed a motion sponsored by Ali Ndume, Senator representing Borno South and Chairman of the Senate Committee on Army.

The lawmakers accordingly asked its joint committee on security to find out why over 200 army officers deserted the service.

Senate President, Ahmed Lawan, in his remarks said though the army was trying its best to secure the country, the effort was not enough.

Gabriel Olonisakin, Chief of Defence Staff; Tukur Buratai, Chief of Army Staff; Sadique Abubakar, Chief of Air Staff; and Ibok-Ete Ekwe Ibas, Chief of Naval Staff; are all due for retirement.

Despite calls for their sack, President Muhammadu Buhari has kept them in office.

Responding, The Presidency said that the removal of service chiefs can only be done by President Muhammadu Buhari.

But in a statement on Tuesday, Special Adviser to the President on Media and Publicity, Femi Adesina, said, “The Senate on Tuesday adopted a resolution calling on the service chiefs to resign or be sacked due to multi-prolonged security challenges in the country.

“The Presidency notes the resolution, and reintegrates that appointment or sack of service clhiefs is a Presidential prerogative, and President Muhammadu Buhari, in his capacity as the Commander-in-Chief of Armed Forces will do what is in the best interest of the country at all times.
