It is no longer news that the foremost supermart chain in Nigeria, Shoprite is selling its stake and share to exit the country.

This is indeed a shocking news for many Nigerians, but the South African corporation has stated they have a better market share gain in South Africa with a 9.4% rise in the last three months, according to bloomberg.com.

About 15 years ago, ShopRite made its entrant into the Nigerian market by opening its first store in Lagos in December 2005 and since then has opened over 30 outlets all over Nigeria. The coming of Shoprite into Nigeria opened the market space for the supermarket outlets, its expansion, and competition.

As the South African brands make move to sell their market share, there are a few supermarkets that we feel may buy-off the stakes and may be able to fit into the ShopRite shoes. This list is in no particular order;

Next Cash & Carry: This is a large warehouse where you can find just about everything from food, technology, housewares and utensils, products both in retail and wholesale. The only thing you cannot find at the NEXT is a car dealership shop and they indeed have a very competitive price.

NEXT also runs offline and online services to carter to their diverse clients in their operating states. NEXT cash & Carry is suited in Abuja, Port-Harcourt, and Lagos with massive parking lots that can house over 100 cars. The mall with its huge human resource and financial resource can certainly cover the lacuna being opened up by ShopRite. The NEXT Cash & Carry is a Nigerian brand allegedly owned politician and businessman Peter Obi.

Ebeano: Ebeano is another Nigerian-owned Supermarket chain. There are about five outlets of Ebeano supermarket in Abuja and Lagos. Their product cuts across food, frozen foods, technology, beauty, and fashion, and they offer both online and offline services. Their cadre of services makes them a viable option to succeed in the Shoprite brand. Ebeano is co-owned by Chukwuma Ojei and Sunday Egede.

Park ‘n’ Shop:  Is a supermarket brand in Nigeria. With about four outlets in Lagos and two outlets in Abuja, they operate strictly retail services, unlike their other competitors. Their products range cuts across Fashion and Lifestyle, Electronics, Furniture and other range of products. Park is preferably called a departmental store but their quality of service and competitive pricing makes them a force to beat in the FMCG Industry. Park ‘n’ Shop  also known as SPAR is an Asian conglomerate owned by Watson Group.

Hubmart Stores: Hubmart is another Nigerian owned retail supermarket-chain which was launched in  2015. Hubmart offers a variety of grocery and non-grocery items which cut across food eatery, bakery, frozen foods, health and beauty segments, and others. They have about four outlets in Lagos and also offer an online option for their clients. Their strength in Ultra-fresh food products makes them a viable competitor in the retail shopping chain. Hubmart is owned by Francis Atuche.
