In the last ten years, the FMCG industry has seen a lot of growth, expansion, and competition. The South-Eastern region has a big lacuna to cover in the establishment of a standard Supermarket outlet across its area.

Nigerians React As Shoprite Announces It’s Exit From Nigeria

There are many outlets that have sprung up in the last few years but very few are able to compete on a large scale with other bigger corporations.

The intended exit of Shoprite from the country creates a massive room for already existing supermarket-chain to thrive and gain more grounds in the region and expand beyond.

Hopefully, they can leverage this and create standard brands. Below is a list of Indigenous Super-market chain established in the region and outside;

Next Cash & Carry: This is a large warehouse where you can find just about everything from packaged food, technology, housewares and utensils, products both in retail and wholesale. The only thing you cannot find at the NEXT is a car dealership shop and they indeed have very competitive prices.

NEXT also runs offline and online services to carter to their diverse clients in their operating states. NEXT cash & Carry is suited in Abuja, Port-Harcourt, and Lagos with massive parking lots that can house over 100 cars. The mall with its huge human resource and financial resource can certainly cover the lacuna being opened up by Shoprite.

The NEXT Cash & Carry is a Nigerian brand allegedly owned politician and businessman Peter Obi.

Market Square:  is an emerging retail chain, they provide a variety of products that cut across prepared food, fresh bakes, groceries, wine, domestic appliances, and other products. Orders/meals can be pre-ordered at the Market square outlet for pick-up. Clients testify to their amazing bread and quality service which makes them a huge competitor in the FMCG industry.

Savemore Marketplace: is very new in the retail chain business with its first outlet opened in Owerri, Imo state in December 2019. They offer various services like prepared food, baked cakes and bread, groceries, health and beauty products, and many others. though, with only one outlet, they are a  major force in the supermart chain business especially with their top-notch services and competitive price. Hopefully, the brand will open more outlets across the eastern region.
