Anambra Assembly Passes Bill To Create Youth Development & Empowerment Commission

Anambra State House of Assembly has overwhelmingly passed a bill that will institutionalize youth empowerment and development in the state.

The bill titled, “Anambra Youth Development Commission and Empowerment Bill, Implementation of Sustainable Youth Policy and other Related Matters 2019, was sponsored by the Lawmaker representing Nnewi North Constituency in Anambra State House of Assembly, Hon. Nonso Smart Okafor.

The bill which was passed, today, Thursday, 13th August 2020, during the house plenary, seeks to create a commission that will have the responsibility of articulating sustainable youth empowerment programs for the state government that is designed to create job opportunities for the youths in the state.

The commission will be saddled with the responsibility to empower the youths in life-changing scalable skills, self-development & entrepreneurship training, and qualitative economic empowerment for startups.

In the legislation, the commission will focus on enterprise and entrepreneurship development, technical and vocational education training, skill acquisition, activating youth-related public institutions and facilities, exploring the entertainment and sports industry, Go-to-Farm policy, ICT training, giving soft loans to SMEs and providing funds for start-ups.

Speaking during the passage of the bill, the Speaker of Anambra State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Uche Okafor, who was optimistic of Governors’ assent to the bill said that the commission will help in improving youth economic development and increase the Internally generated revenue of Anambra state.
