ECOWAS Donates Food To Vulnerable Households In Nigeria

The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) in solidarity is donating food grains to vulnerable households in Nigeria in furtherance of its response to the COVID-19 pandemic.

This was revealed in a statement from the ECOWAS website issued on Tuesday, August 18. Among the items are 3,999 tons of cereals comprising of millet and sorghum.

According to the statement, the food donations which starts on Friday, August 21, aims to help the most vulnerable households cope with multiple crises while safeguarding their livelihoods.

The first food donation is financed by the ECOWAS Commission’s Humanitarian Emergency Fund for Disaster and Emergency Relief to member states affected by a humanitarian crisis. It consists of 1,196 tons of cereals.

Meanwhile, the second donation funded by the resources of the Regional Food Security Storage Support Project is made up of 2,803 tons. It is financed by the European Union for a total of €56 million (N25,563,008,587).

It was also noted that the grains will be taken from the stocks in the ECOWAS Regional Food Security Reserve and distributed free of charge to the households mostly affected by the humanitarian situation.

The official handover ceremony will be chaired by the Commissioners of Social Affairs and Gender and Agriculture, Environment and Water Resources of the ECOWAS Commission, Dr. Siga Fatima Jagne and Mr. Sékou Sangaré, respectively.

This development is coming more than a week after the ECOWAS Bank for Investment and Development (EBID) provided support to the tune of $2.9 billion (N1,099,100,000,000) to West African countries.
