Barcelona has appointed Ronald Koeman as its new head coach on Monday. He replaces Quique Setien, who was let go following the 8-2 Champions League quarterfinals drubbing at the hands of Bayern Munich.
Koeman will leave his role as Netherlands coach to take over at the Camp Nou in time for the new season.
The former Barcelona player and assistant manager had turned down the chance to take charge of Barcelona in January, when the club was looking for a replacement for Ernesto Valverde. Eventually the club appointed former Real Betis boss Setien.
According to various reports, club president Josep Maria Bartomeu’s first choice was Mauricio Pochettino. However, a few board members were against the move as the ex-Tottenham Hotspur boss — who was a city rival Espanyol player and manager earlier — once said that he would rather go and work on a farm than manage the Barca.
Anaedoonline.ng reported that Barcelona have sacked its technical secretary Eric Abidal and. This comes one day after Quique Setien was let go as coach.
“Barcelona and Eric Abidal have reached an agreement for the ending of the contract that united the two parties,” the club said in an official statement.

“The club would publicly like to thank Eric Abidal for his professionalism, commitment, dedication and the close and positive nature of his relationship with all aspects of the Blaugrana family.”
It remains to be seen who will take over in the Catalan club’s sporting department and what will happen with Ramon Planes, who led that department alongside Abidal.
Barcelona also sacked manager Quique Setien, three days after his side’s humiliating 8-2 defeat by Bayern Munich in the Champions League.
