Ogun State Chief Magistrates’ Court sitting in Abeokuta has arraigned a 57-year-old prophet, Ebenezer Ogunmefun, arrested for allegedly raping a 15-year-old girl who was brought to his church by the mother for spiritual cleansing.
The police prosecutor, Inspector Moshood Hammed, speaking before the court, said the clergyman residing at No. 1 prof. Ajibo Toluca Pioneer street, Olomore area, Abeokuta, told the victim’s mother that she was possessed by evil spirits and needed to be cleansed thoroughly. The prophet who was arraigned on a one-count charge of sexual abuse was said to have allegedly made the victim swore by the bible to never tell anyone that he raped her.
The police prosecutor said the offense contravened Section 33 of the Child Rights Law of Ogun State, 2006.
The clergyman pleaded not guilty to the charge.
The presiding Chief Magistrate, Solomon Banwo, granted the clergyman bail in the sum N750,000 with two sureties in like sum. The Magistrate ordered that one of the sureties must be the defendant’s spouse and the other must be a community leader.
The case was adjourned till September 2 for hearing.
Recall that Anaedoonline reported that A 30-year-old man, named Jomaph, has been arrested after he was caught on a CCTV camera raping an 11-year-old girl in Sapele, Delta State.
This incident occurred along Oleh Road in the timber town at about 7 a.m., on Wednesday morning.
The victim (name withheld) had gone to the toilet that morning to ease herself. She returned minutes later crying that she had been raped by Jomaph, who happens to be their neighbor.
Jomaph had denied the incident totally initially. According to a source: “He even swore that he had not set eyes on the girl that morning. Other neighbors pleaded with him to admit to the crime if really he had done it. “He vehemently refused and even went to the police to arrest the girl and her people for defamation of character. But a CCTV camera installed by a neighbor for his business exposed him.”

The police had invited the girl and her parents to the station “and were in the process of investigating the allegation when the neighbor came up with the CCTV footage” the source added.
A source at the Sapele Police Station confirmed the arrest. “Yes, the young man was arrested after a CCTV confirmed he sneaked into the toilet, with the little girl. The matter is under investigation,” the police source said.
