Family of man who died of coronavirus, his wife, and two children has reportedly taken their own lives because they were stigmatized by relatives and friends after his death.

Parimi Snuneetha, 50, her son Narasaiah Phanikumar, 25, and 23-year-old daughter Lakshmi Aparna, ended their lives by jumping off a bridge in Andhra Pradesh’s Rajahmundry on Wednesday. August 19.

“Preliminary inquiries revealed that the family came to the road-cum-rail bridge on Godavari river at Kovvur in a car at around 1 am and jumped into the river, which has been in full spate due to heavy floods,” authorities said.

According to India police superintendent, after the death of 52-year-old Narasaiah, who was infected with Covid-19 four days ago, and was cremated by the civic authorities the following day, the bereaved family was thrown into depression.

Officers claimed they felt “humiliated” after relatives and friends failed to comfort them after their loss. Police recovered a suicide note in the family’s car close to the bridge.

“Apparently, they were in a state of depression after the death of the head of the family and none of their relatives had called on them,” the DSP said.

The Police are yet to recover the bodies from the river, due to heavy flood.
Reports show that the level of the social stigma surrounding Coronavirus in India is high and has seen some sufferers and their families being treated as plagues.
According to India Today, a mum in West Bengal tried to kill herself and her two children last month after her husband died of Coronavirus.
Locals came to their rescue promptly.
