Luuk de Jong scored twice in the 12th and 33rd minute for Sevilla, cancelling out Romelu Lukaku’s early goal from the spot for Inter Milan five minutes into the minute.

Diego Godin later scored an equalizer for Inter Milan, but Diego Carlos had the final word, scoring the winner for Sevilla in the 74th minute

This is their tournament and their trophy, with victory over Antonio Conte’s Inter Milan providing them with a record sixth triumph in the competition.

That they won in such thrilling circumstances, against a team of Inter’s quality, will only add to the sense of achievement for Julen Lopetegui, the former Spain and Real Madrid manager who had never before won a trophy as a coach.

It was emphatically his night, thanks in large part to Romelu Lukaku, the Inter striker who scored the first goal and the last goal of this final. The first was in the right end, giving his side the lead, but the second was a dreadfully unfortunate own goal.

Lukaku has been a sensation for Inter this season but he missed a key chance in the second half and then inadvertently turned Diego Carlos’ overhead kick into his own net.

Before then, the teams had fought like wrestlers grappling on the floor. Luuk de Jong struck twice in the first half for Sevilla, cancelling out Lukaku’s early penalty and then giving his side the lead, but Diego Godin headed Inter level before the break.

It was brilliantly breathless at times, especially in the first half. But as the game clogged up, Sevilla took control. They always do in the Europa League, a competition in which they are utterly dominant.

Since moving to Inter from Manchester United, Lukaku has been nothing short of devastating, showing the sort of pace and direct running that had been so absent from his second season at Old Trafford.

Barely three minutes had passed by the time he set off on his first surging run of this final, storming down the right channel and prompting the most obvious of fouls from the clumsy Diego Carlos. The subsequent penalty was typically assured from the Belgian, who has now scored in 11 consecutive matches in the Europa League.

It is a measure of Inter’s improvement under Conte that they finished just one point behind Juventus in Serie A this season. After years of chaos, and almost a decade without a trophy, Inter have risen again under the former Chelsea manager, and they are one of the last teams you would want to be trailing after only five minutes.

But the Europa League brings something special out of Sevilla, who came into this final having never lost a one-off knockout match in the history of the competition. Within seven minutes of Lukaku’s opener, De Jong had headed the Spanish side back into the match.
