A number of men groan in displeasure at the thought of dealing with women’s reproductive organs, while some doctors find it intriguing with undiluted interest to explore the women’s reproductive system.

Gynecology is one of the special fields of the health sector. Obstetrics and Gynecology is the medical specialty that encompasses the two subspecialties of obstetrics (covering pregnancy, childbirth, and the postpartum period) and gynecology (covering the health of the female reproductive system – vagina, uterus, ovaries, and breasts). It is commonly abbreviated as OB-GYN or OB/GYN.

Life as a gynecologist is interesting and sometimes challenging. Dealing with women is a lot peculiar. According to Gynecologist Joseph Ugboaja, his passion for this sector of medical sciences has led him to make landmark impacts in the hospital to ensure the smooth sail of study and practice in NAUTH, Nnewi.

Dr. Ugboaja started off with Residency training in NAUTH which ended in 2011 with the acquisition of Fellowships of the National Postgraduate College of Nigeria(FMCOG) and West African College of Surgeons(FWACS). He later added that to the International College of Surgeons( FICS). Since 2011, he has practiced as a general Obstetrician & Gynaecologist but with interest in Fertility management and Minimal Access Surgery.

In 2015, he traveled to India for a one year experience in Minimal Access Surgery and Assisted Reproductive Techniques. This culminated in the award of Fellowship of Minimal Access Surgery(FMAS), Diploma in Minimal Access Surgery(DMAS), and Postgraduate Diploma in Assisted Reproductive Technique(dip.ART).

Upon coming back from India at the end of one year, he upgraded the unit to the subspecialty of Minimal Access Surgery(MAS) and Assisted Reproductive Technique(ART) and that singular venture revolutionized the practice of Gynaecological endoscopy in the hospital boosting training and service delivery.

Some of the procedures taught and practiced by the Residents, Nurses, Interns, medical students, and younger consultants include diagnostic hysterolaparoscopy, diagnostic hysteroscopy, laparoscopic ovarian cystectomy, and adhesiolysis, hysteroscopic adhesiolysis, septum resection, artificial insemination among others.

Practicing at this level has made it easy, fulfilling, and exciting for him and the practitioners at the hospital because these are, hitherto services that people travel abroad or far places to access. He was able to bring them to NAUTH despite all odds and seeing what has come out of that initiative makes it all together worth it.

Additionally, that exposure has also assisted the hospital in establishing MAS for other units in the hospital namely General surgery, Urology, and pediatric surgery units. These units now carry out both diagnostic and operative MAS procedures some of which include laparoscopic cholecystectomy, Transurethral Resection of the Prostate(TURP), lap Orchidopexy among others.

In addition to clinical duties, he also enjoys research and writing in the area of women’s Health with over 70 quality research articles published in reputable journals across the globe and also a series on women’s health and management for some media houses.

He has given his unreserved appreciation to other consultants on the team like Drs Ogelle and Enenchukwu who hold down the fort and are working hard to maintain the unit’s tempo, even as managerial duties interfere with Dr. Ugboaja’s clinical duties. They deserve commendation.
