CAF Announce New Date For African Women’s Tournament

The Confederation of Africa Football has confirmed that the postponed 2020 Africa Women Cup of Nations will now hold in July 2022 with host for the tournament yet to be revealed.

The CAF Executive Committee on Thursday ratified the decisions of the CAF Emergency Committee on the resumption of the qualifiers for the Africa Cup of Nations Cameroon 2021, and the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022 qualifiers.

The biennial women’s continental football championship was in April postponed due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

“Total Women’s Africa Cup of Nations 2022. The final tournament will be played in July 2022,” a statement from CAF read.

However, the CAF Executive Committee also ratified the commencement of the women’s Champions League to be held yearly on an eight-team format.

“Each of the six CAF Zones will organise qualifiers to determine the finalists for the eight-team tournament. The breakdown is as one team from each zone, one team from the host country, and one additional team,” the CAF statement added.

“For the maiden edition, the zonal union of the host country will have two representatives. However, for subsequent editions, the host country will have only one representative whilst the zonal union of the defending champions will qualify two teams.

“The eight qualified teams will be drawn into two groups of four teams each in accordance with the regulations.

“The competition will be held annually and during the second half of the year.
