One Year In Office: Four Most Performing Lawmakers In Anambra Assembly

The Seventh (7th) Assembly of Anambra State House of Assembly was inaugurated on June 12, 2019, after a proclamation by the Executive Governor of Anambra State, Chief Dr. Willie Obiano.

After the Inauguration, the lawmaker representing Ayamelum, Hon. Uche Okafor was elected the Speaker of Anambra State House of Assembly, while his counterpart representing Ihiala 2, Hon. Pascal Agbodike was elected as the Deputy Speaker.

Since her Inauguration, the House of Assembly has actively discharged her core responsibilities of lawmaking, representation, and oversight. The House has passed about eleven (11) bills and about seventy (70) motions under review.

However, in every legislature, there are lawmakers who distinguished themselves either through their intellectual capacity, finesse, and psychic disposition required of people who are representative of the people.

From a non-partisan view, out of Thirty (30) members, we will choose the four (4) most performing lawmakers who worked in the public interest despite difficult circumstances in the last one (1) year.

1. Nonso Smart Okafor (APGA) 

Hon. Nonso Smart Okafor is the lawmaker representing Nnewi North State Constituency in Anambra State House of Assembly. Despite being a first-timer, he has changed the narrative of representation in his constituency and has also remained outstanding in his legislative activities in the House of Assembly. He is arguably the Most Performing Lawmaker in the current Anambra State House of Assembly.

Bills and Motions 

Bills: The young lawmaker was the first lawmaker to sponsor a private member bill in the 7th Assembly. The bill “Anambra Youth Development and Empowerment Commission Bill, Implementation of Sustainable Youth Policy, to institutionalize youth empowerment and development in Anambra State, by creating a commission that will have the responsibility of articulating sustainable youth empowerment programs for the state government that is designed to create job opportunities for the youths in the state.

His other bills are still at the presentation level, he has also co-sponsored many other bills.

Motions: In the area of motions, he also tops the chart in the number of motions presented. They include;

1. Calling on the Executive Governor of Anambra State to Set-up a Waste Recycling Plant in Anambra State.

2. Calling on the Executive Governor of Anambra State, His Excellency, Chief Dr. Willie Obiano, to come to the aid of Nnewi and provide a lasting solution to the deadly flooding and erosion menace ravaging the town.

3. Calling on the Executive Governor of Anambra State, His Excellency, Chief Dr. Willie Obiano to intervene in the deplorable 100-Foot Road Nnewi erosion site. The erosion site has been reclaimed.

4. Motion calling on Governor of Anambra, His Excellency, Chief Dr. Willie Obiano, to reconstruct the dilapidated roads in Otolo, Uruagu, Umudim, and Nnewichi.

5. Motion urging the State Government to look into the issue of Excessive Electricity Billing of his constituents by Enugu Electricity Distribution Commission (EEDC),

6. Petition on the suspension of Miss Oramasionwu Oluebubechukwu, a 300 Level Chemical Engineering Student of Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University (Uli Campus), who was suspended by the school authorities after she was stabbed by a fellow student.

Projects 

1. 3-Bedroom Bungalow for Three (3) Childless Widows in Nnewi

According to the Speaker of Anambra State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Uche Okafor, the vibrant Hon. Nonso Smart Okafor is the first lawmaker in the 7th Assembly to start, complete and commission a constituency project.

He built and furnished a 3- Bedroom Bungalow for three childless widows who were married to the same husband and were living in a crumbling mud house in Okpuno Nnewichi, Nnewi.

The Bungalow has a furnished sitting room with a set of cushion chairs, side stools, centre table and curtains for the windows; it also has a toilet, Bath and Kitchen. He also installed a flat-screen LED TV and GOtv with a one-year full subscription.

2. Toilet Facility for Eke Amangwu Market, Umudim, Nnewi.

Hon. Nonso Okafor also took his project delivery by also being the first lawmaker in the House of Assembly to build his second constituency project. He built a modern Toilet Facility for Eke Amangwu Market, Umudim, Nnewi, a market that has been without a toilet facility since the existence of the market.

Other projects are said to be in advanced stages.

2. Hon. Johnbosco Akaegbobi (PDP)

Hon. Johnbosco Akaegbobi is the lawmaker representing Nnewi South Constituency 11, in Anambra State House of Assembly. He is believed to be the youngest member in the 7th Assembly, after he recently celebrated his 35th birthday. Just like his Nnewi North counterpart, they spent nine (9) months in election litigations, yet remained undeterred. He roundly defeated the Former Speaker of Anambra State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Rita Maduagwu.

Bills and Motions

Motions: Hon. Johnbosco has sponsored a number of motions in the Anambra State House of Assembly.
Some of them include;

1. Calling the attention of the Governor and Commissioner for works to the abandoned Afor Ukpor-Umunuko-Amihe-Ozubulu and Umuike-Ezinifite road.

2. Calling on the attention of the Governor and Commissioner for health on the urgent need to revitalize Ukpor General Hospital, a hospital that serves as the only General Hospital in the Constituency.

3. Calling on the Governor to direct the Commissioner for Environment, the State Project Coordinator of NEWMAP, and other related agencies to take necessary steps to control the gully erosion ravaging Ebenator Central School, Obinugwu Ebenator, and its environs.

Bills: He has also co-sponsored about six (6) bills.

Projects 

1. Hon. Johnbosco Akaegbobi was the second lawmaker to complete a constituency project in the 7th Assembly. He built the first-ever Community Primary Health Care Centre in Ebenator Community.

The Primary Healthcare Centre has the following but not limited to; perimeter fence and entrance gate, portable water, and power supply source, consulting room, adolescent health servicing room, delivery rooms, pharmacy/dispensing unit, laboratory, medical records area, procedure room, restrooms, kitchen, etc, all well equipped.

2. He also built a borehole at Agbuana Ukpor.

3. Within the same period, Hon. Akaegbobi was said to have renovated and re-roofed the dilapidated structures in Orie Umunuko Ukpor.

3. Hon. Nobel Chukwunonso Igwe (PDP) 

Hon. Noble Chukwunoso Igwe is the Member representing Ogbaru Constituency 1 in Anambra State House of Assembly. Though a first-timer, he appears to have mastered the acts of legislation, no thanks to his boss, Hon. Chukwuma Onyema, who is representing Ogbaru Federal Constituency in the House of Representative.

Motions 

1. Dredging of Sakamori Drainage System

2. Repair of Obodoukwu and Ojoto Roads Repair of Obodoukwu/Ede Roads

3. GMO/Mgbuka-amazu Road.

4. Immediate repair of two bad spots opposite the ULTRA-MODERN PARK ALONG BRIDGEHEAD, UPPER IWEKA.

5. Regulation and prevention of the erection of incessant speed breakers (bumps) on Anambra roads.

Bills: He has Co-sponsored many bills including the bill on the establishment of Anambra State Youth Empowerment Commission, Implementation of Sustainable Youth Policy, and other related matters

*Projects 

1. The building of Security post and East Niger Community Hall (Ongoing)

2. Two (2) days Free Medical Outreach program for his constituents.

3. Palliative work on the bad spots at Obodoukwu and Ojoto roads.

4. Construction of 9 Culverts and Gutters in Okpoko

5. Construction of Water borehole system at East Niger Layout.

6. Granting of One million Naira bursary to Twenty (20) undergraduates.

4. Hon. Dr. Okechukwu Okoye (APGA) 

Hon. Dr. Okechukwu Okoye is the Member representing Aguata ll Constituency in Anambra State House of Assembly. He is also a First-timer. Within the year under review, he has recorded some achievement in his Constituency.

Motions 

1. Calling on His Excellency, the Governor of Anambra State; Chief Willie Obiano to direct the Hon. Commissioner for work and Environment as a matter of expediency to control the flood menace on Isuofia/Igboukwu boundary road.

2. Calling on His Excellency, the Governor of Anambra State; Chief Willie Obiano to direct the Hon. Commissioner for Health as a matter of urgency to commence massive sensitization of the public on the effect and encourage them on the measures to control Gastroenteritis- (stooling and vomiting).

3. Calling on the Governor of Anambra State; His Excellency, Dr. Willie Obiano to direct the Commissioner for Basic Education to take the necessary steps towards setting up additional Governments owned schools in certain strategic areas within the State.

Bills: He has co-sponsored some bills, which include; Anambra State Factory workers Safety Bill, 2019 and Anambra State Indiscriminate Refuse Dumping Bill, 2019.

Projects 

1. Distribution of Original Butterfly Sewing Machine to his constituents.

2. Renovation of Community Secondary School Isuofia.

3. Construction Of Solid Drainage Channel for Flood Control at Umuchi Village Ekwulobia.

4. Construction Of Drainage Channel for Flood Control at Ihuokpala Village Ekwulobia.
