There has been a burning agitation by many Nigerians, Young and old over the brutality of the police Anti- robbery squad(SARS). Many people have called for the reform and even the demise of the department due to their numerous inhumane atrocities and crimes across the Nation especially in the Southern parts of the country.

During IG live session, the DCP stated that the outcry of the Nigerians over the complaints and unprofessional conduct of the SARS operatives have been heard.

Mba maintained that changes are being effected in the force which will be followed to the letter and see erring officers dealt with appropriately. He made it clear that every reform that has been rolled out in the wake of the outcry against the police unit will be strictly adhered to.

DCP Mba listed at least 3 crucial points to address the operatives brutality, and they include;

  • Routine check-ups in different parts of the country have been immediately brought to a halt.
  • It is illegal for SARS operatives or other police officers to go through the mobile phones or properties of citizens.
  • On filming police officers, he stated that citizens can only record their interactions with police officers when it is moving from a point of legality to illegality. He, however, advised citizens to be careful in their interactions with armed officers.

Nigerians have continued to call out the SARS operatives over their brutality against the Nigerian youths. The statistics of youth who have lost their lives or being harassed by the operatives is unaccounted for but it is worthy to note that at least each state in Southern Nigeria has had over 100 cases of SARS brutality in the last couple of years.

We hope the recent agitation yields a more positive result.
