Reggae artist Johnny Nash, popular for his iconic song I Can See Clearly Now, has died at the age of 80 at his home in Houston, US, where he was born.

Nash’s son confirmed that his father, who had been in declining health, died of natural causes.

John Nash III told TMZ: “He was a wonderful father and family man. He loved people and the world. He will be missed by his community. Family was his everything.”

The singer-songwriter began singing as a child and made his major label debut with the 1957 song A Teenager Sings the Blues.

He was 32 when topped the charts with I Can See Clearly Now in 1972, after he had spent nearly two decades in the business.

His song, I Can See Clearly Now was termed “2 minutes and 48 seconds of undiluted inspiration” by rock critic Robert Christgau.

The song was reportedly written by Nash while recovering from cataract surgery, I Can See Clearly Now was a story of overcoming hard times.

He peaked commercially in the late 1960s and early 1970s, when he had hits with Hold Me Tight, You Got Soul, an early version of Marley’s Stir It Up.

He also had a number one hit in the UK in 1975 with Tears on My Pillow. He is survived by his son Johnny Nash Jr, daughter Monica and wife Carli Nash.
