Fernandes Hails Darlow For Being First EPL Keeper To Save His Penalty

Bruno Fernandes for the first time missed his spot-kick for Man United and the Portuguese star has congratulated Newcastle goalkeeper Karl Darlow for his heroics, Anaedoonline.ng reports.

Man United defeated Newcastle by 4-1 at Saint James’ Park but the midfielder had his 11th effort from a penalty saved by the Welsh shot-stopper. Fernandes has scored all of his ten spot-kicks for the Red Devils since his arrival from Sporting Lisbon in January 2019.

But the 26-year-old had his effort from eight yards stopped for the first time by Darlow when United and the Magpies were tied at 1-1.

Marcus Rashford won the penalty after a late tackle from Jamal Lewis but the resulting spot-kick did not change the scoreline.

Fernandes stepped up to the spot and did make not use of his technique giving Darlow a better chance to make a splendid save.

Fernandes told Utdreport: “Congratulations to him. “He is the first goalkeeper in the Premier League to save a penalty from me.”

But Fernandes got his name on the scoresheet to score his first goal of the new season and his 50th game wearing the red colours of the Manchester-based side.

Rashford made it 3-1 before Aaron Wan Bissaka put the icing on the cake but Fernandes joked that the England defender’s goal was a fluke. He told MUTV

“[We were so happy] because we didn’t know he can shoot. “So it’s difficult for us believing he can score because we never see him shooting.

“We were talking about it now in the dressing room and asking him because we all were thinking he wanted to cross and he makes a bad ball and scores. “But I’m happy for him, he deserved the goal and we always ask this from him.

“Be more positive, be more in the box, try and improve because he has such good qualities.
