Hon. Desmond Elliot, Nollywood actor and member of the Lagos State House of Assembly representing Surulere constituency I, has condemned the use of social media to incite violence. He made this known while speaking during plenary in the Lagos Assembly today.
He condemned the invasion of the Oba of Lagos, Rilwan Akiolu’s Palace by thugs. He called on social media influencers and celebrities to stop the spread of hate already.
The Law Maker said:
“We need to address certain things, the Nigerian youths, social media, social influencers, all of these are making the narratives that we are seeing today, except we are joking with ourselves. Social media, yes, though good, has its negative impact, let me first thank you for condemning the killings at Lekki. When I went through the comments, I could not believe it, Mr. Speaker.
The curses, abuses from children and I asked myself is this Nigeria, what is going on? Children cursing, people having effrontery to enter an Oba’s palace, hold the staff of office; culture is gone. Mr. Speaker, in the next five years there will be no Nigeria if we don’t start now.”
The lawmaker said the looters are youths as well and that this is the only country we have. He added that the constitutional means to change government is through election.

Recall that Nigerian celebrities, social media influencers and youths had taken to social media and the streets in a peaceful #EndSARS protests calling for an end to police brutality and a total reform of the Nigerian police. However, the protest degenerated into hoodlums taking to the streets looting and destroying government and private properties and causing most state governors to impose curfew.
