A former Arsenal striker, Ian Wright, has warned Manchester United forwards, Odion Ighalo and Anthony Martial that the arrival of Edinson Cavani could have a negative impact on their performances for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side in training and match-day.

Wright gave the warning ahead of Manchester United’s Premier League clash against Arsenal on Sunday., He also compared Cavani’s arrival to a situation he experienced during his own career when a young Nicolas Anelka arrived at Arsenal.

The former Gunners attacker believes both Ighalo and Martial could find themselves in a similar situation now they are in contention with Cavani.

“I saw a picture of him [Cavani] the other day,” he said on his podcast Wrighty’s House.

“As a striker, I know Anthony Martial and even Ighalo, you see him come in… your whole energy just goes somewhere – it’s not right.

“I remember when Anelka came in. He was 17 and after the first two sessions of watching somebody of that calibre come in and I know Cavani is of world class status now but Anelka watching him then my energy changed because I knew that the end was nigh.

“Now I am not saying the end is nigh for Martial and it can’t be with Cavani, with him coming in stopping the gap.”

Ahead of the clash on Sunday, Arsenal manager, Mikel Arteta, has warned his players to keep up their attitude, when they face Manchester United in the Premier League.

The Gunners bounced back from a 1-0 home defeat against Leicester City, with a 3-0 victory over Dundalk in the Europa League on Thursday night.

Eddie Nketiah, Joe Willock and Nicolas Pepe all scored as Arsenal took control of Group B with six points from two games.

Arteta, speaking after the game, urged his players to quickly turn their attentions to this weekend trip to Old Trafford, where they face a rampant United side unbeaten in their last four matches.

“After losing the way we lost against Leicester, it was painful at home and took us a few days to digest that defeat.

“But you have to react straightaway with a win, with this type of attitude and let’s get ready. We go to Old Trafford and we try to win again,” Arteta said.

On his part, Manchester United manager, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, has confirmed that Alex Telles will play no part when they face Arsenal in the Premier League on Sunday.

Telles tested positive for COVID-19 and is still in self-isolation. The defender arrived at Old Trafford this summer and has played in only one game for the Red Devils.

“Telles won’t be ready. Everyone else at the moment look as if they would be involved,” Solskjaer told a press conference on Friday.

When asked about the availability of outcasts Sergio Romero and Phil Jones, he replied: “Sergio just returned to training this week and just started his pre-season work.

“Phil has been injured, and he had an operation, and he is working really hard to get back. Hopefully, he will be fit by December.”

“There’s still the rivalry, the history, but now we don’t think about them as our rivals or anyone as our rivals. We just need to put points on the board,” Solskjaer said.
