JUST IN: INEC Chairman Set to Step Down

The outgoing chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, will hand over office to an interim electoral commissioner until the Senate approves his re-appointment as INEC chairman.

 

Prof Yakubu was first appointed by President Muhammadu Buhari in November 2015 with his first term ending on Monday, November 9. However President Buhari has re-appointed him and submitted his name to the National Assembly for confirmation of a second term.

He is expected to hand over office to a commissioner whose terms has not expired.

The Inter-Party Advisory Council (IPAC) believes that Prof Yakubu performed well in his first term in office and his reappointment as INEC chairman was good for Nigeria and urged him to continue with his electoral reforms.
