In-form Genk striker, Paul Onuachu, has promised to reenact the club scoring form with the Super Eagles in the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON ) double header against the Leone Stars of Sierra Leone.
Onuachu has scored an impressive nine goals in the current campaign and currently joint-top scorer along with Beerschot’s Raphael Holzhauser in the Belgian Jupiler League.
Speaking in Lagos on the fringe of unveiling of CIG Motors as the Official Automobile of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), the lanky 26-year-old striker said he was ready to do his best for the national team.
“Football is an up and down thing and you try to find your balance again,” said Onuachu who has a solitary goal for the Super Eagles since his international debut in a pre-2019 AFCON friendly against Egypt in Asaba on 26 March 2019.
He continued:“ I will just keep working hard and keep fighting for me to be part of the team and whenever I am part of the team, I will try to do my best to score for the country.
“But if it the goal is not coming yet we cannot do anything about it; I will just keep working hard for the country and also try to score.”
Onuachu’s rich vein of form in Belgium has seen hin being listed in 12th position in the race for the 2020/21 European Golden Shoe award .
“In my club, I play with people who know and understand my strength,” he explained. “ It is a different scenario in the national team where we just try to fix everything together to make the best out of everybody in the team.”
He however, lamented the absence of the fans for the Friday’s tie against Sierra Leone even as he admitted that the Super Eagles would cope since they had all along been playing sans fans in their various clubs.
