National Association of University Students (NAUS) has express dis-satisfaction over dehumanization of Nigerians In Bangladesh, calls on the embassy and the Nigerian minister of foreign affairs to solve the issue of face Nigerian students

President NAUS, Comr. Felix S. Ijegalu in a release stated that the illegal arrest of Nigerians since June 2020 in Bangladesh by security operatives is very disheartening.

This started when security operatives stormed into the office of a Nigerian businessman where he has been conducting his business (Cargo shipment of garment products) and arrested everyone and carted away their goods. Till today, sixteen(16) of them arrested that day are still in jail without any bail or fair trial.

Few weeks later, a similar incident occurred where twelve(12) Nigerians were arrested (mostly students ) by the police while they were looking for one man. They arrested another set of nigerians in another office of a Nigerian business man(cargo business).

Everyone present in that office were taken away including their goods.

Further more, another set of fifteen(15) persons were also arrested after few weeks and all of them have been refused bail and not fairly tried.

It could be recalled that when the Nigerian Community Leader (NCL) and his assistant went to the security agency to enquire for the illegal arrest of Nigerians, the Police in a very deplorable and discourteous manner arrested and detained them till date.

As it stands, more than $2million worth of goods and money has been lost by these Nigerians.

The Bangladesh police arrests Nigerian suspects and call the print and electronic media to come and take pictures and videos of the alleged suspects and everything will be broadcasted on the TV, newspapers even on social media platforms without the court proving the suspects guilty.

The press will label the suspect criminals without trial. This creates an intense dislike between Nigerians and the citizens of Bangladesh, for example, the community president’s restaurant has been closed by the landlord ever since it was shown on TV that he is a gang leader, that Nigerians come to his restaurant for eating and meeting therefore he is the leader of criminals as all Nigerians are criminals. Currently he is loosing a whole lot of thousands keeping that place closed.

Many people arrested has lost huge sum of money from the security agents, their goods has been seized, they lost their place of abode too.

We are calling on the Bangladesh Embassy in Nigeria and the Minister of foreign affairs to call the Bangladesh Government to order or face Nigerian students. All we ask for is for them(suspects) to be charged to court let the guilty ones face the wrath of the law and others be granted bail while the investigation goes on.

If this episode lingers unnecessarily it may just become a new trend for any Nigerian living in Bangladesh. Bangladeshis are living and working in Nigeria and Nigerians are treating them good so Nigerians should be treated well.
