As anaedoonline.ng  reporter got to Adam and Eve park Ngwa road Aba, she was asked to walk the remaining part of the journey which was described as not-so-far. She wondered why she needed to walk, there has to be a Tricycle popularly known as Keke to take me to the popular Ahia Ohuru market. How wrong she was.

Politicians use road construction as bait during elections, the roads enumerated below have been used as campaign baits time and time again by politicians, with each passing tenure these roads get worse. 60 years after independence, we are still anticipating bumps while driving, after plying a route for some time, we apply our natural Nigerian skills of knowing where exactly which bump is and avoid them.

Below are the worst roads in south east Nigeria in order of worst to worse. Due diligence shows these are the worst roads our reporters were able to uncover in the 5 states, if there are other bad roads you know, feel free to add them in the comment section below.

This article will judge these roads based on the following

  • Quality of the road
  • How long the road has been dilapidated
  • The government’s effort.

Ngwa Road Aba

This is the distance from Adam and Eve park to Number 1 Ngwa road, a 3.8km road. The state of this road is so bad that it is NOT motorable, sadly it is a major road routing one of the major markets in the state. There was shallow drainage on both sides of the road that have now been blocked by undisposed sewage. The last place on earth you want to be when it rains is this road, you literally have to fold your cloth to your knee to swim past, if it was just water, maybe it will be fair. We are talking about bacteria-infested mud water sipping out of the clogged drainage, broken sewage, dirts, faeces, heaps of waste you have to swim across, worst of all they are not flowing, they are stagnant.

We are not talking about potholes now, we are talking about a road entirely damaged and filled with dirt, heaps of waste.

Who is responsible for this road?- NDDC, (Niger Delta Development Commission) the governor(s)  has sworn not to do anything on those roads as it is not in their jurisdiction, while NDDC continues to turn a blind eye, the people living there suffer from unimaginable diseases, deaths, infections etc.

Mmiri Ama Ikonne (Odo miri bed sida) ABA

This road has been called Odo miri bedsida, the biblical river that never dries where people wait around forever for healing that never comes. The road has been dilapidated for so long and never dries that the people have given up on it ever been repaired. Fortunately, some government tried to fix this road in 2009, in less than 6 months it went from bad to worse. The people concluded it wasn’t a myth, the road can never be fixed. While this is a myth, the state government responsible for that road has done the least to fix those roads.

Ama Ikonne Faulks road

Ama Ikonne Faulks road

Once upon a time, the road got so bad it was rumored that Eze Ikonne whose palace was right in front of the spoils had charms buried in the water and these charms were the cause of the road deteriorating no matter how many times it was fixed. The community rallied to lynch the traditional ruler who had to disguise as a woman to run for his life.

The road trails from Osusu by Faulks to Boundary road which is a 1km road. It has a large pothole covering almost ¾ of the road.  As Nigerians do well in turning misfortune to gains, during the rainy season, it provides employment for able-bodied men.

At a time, when there was no alternative route, men stand at each end of the road, if a passerby can pay N50 or N100 depending on body size, the men will carry you on their back so you don’t get to swim in the bacteria-infested water. This is a shame!

W’Bank Tasks Enugu Govt. on Establishment of Rural Road Maintenance Fund

Enugu Onitsha Expressway

Break and quench is the best term to use for the Enugu Onitsha expressway, the 119km road railing from Enugu state to Onitsha has been a major source of road accidents, delays, waste of resources in the south east in the last 5 to 10 years. At each turn, there is always a part of the road damaged and needing severe repairs. Tenure after tenure, the federal government will peruse a part of the road, only for the other part to deteriorate the most.

Truthfully, It has been undergoing repairs, however, the road is still not in a healthy state. The road is a major road linking states and towns in south east, moving so many businesses. The importance of the Enugu-Onitsha expressway cannot be overemphasized.  It is strategic, connecting the South-East and the South-South. It links Anambra, Enugu, and Ebonyi states, as well as the northern states of Benue and Kogi. A federal highway of that magnitude is expected to be in good shape.

Motorists have to divert from time to time on the road, it is never a straight road. It cracked so bad that major potholes trap heavy-duty vehicles causing endless hours of traffic jam.

At each point in these years, the roads have been bad, but the Ugwuoba section of that road is in an entirely different clime. The road is not fit for humans, even animals will cringe.

The Naze to Nekede Road Owerri

From Naze to Nekede, to Ihiagwa connecting FUTO (Federal University of Technology Owerri) and Federal Polytechnic Nekede, a 5.5km road is in a dilapidated state. Motorists avoid those roads like a plague. The roads have been deteriorating with potholes in different turns for years but had its worst hit in 2015. The road went from bad to worse. A transport that would previously take N100 for an average commuter/student, is almost about N300 now. During the brief regime of Gov. Ihedioha, the road was awarded and the community saw work ongoing, as soon as the supreme court gave its ruling on Gov. Uzodinma taking over, every activity on the road was put to a stop.

This road affects the lives of the  students attending the federal polytechnic Nekede and FUTO who habit that vicinity. They have to take other routes to get to their destinations which are most times distant, time-consuming and not necessarily better.

Ikwo Road Ebonyi

The Ikwo road through Opubara junction is undoubtedly the worst road in Ebonyi state. To the Governor’s credit, the road is a federal road hence he is excused.

The Ikwo road, an 11km road has been dilapidated for years. It is so bad that motorists avoid it, a car with a high bumper can still pass through, but low cars will have a hard time. It is an 11km road and affects the livelihood of the Ikwo community resident in the area. This is a one hour ride but the bad road factor makes it a 4-hour journey. This road affects the sales of Abakaliki rice from consumers plying the cross-river axis. It is a horrible experience passing through that route.

It is not okay to wait till the road is in its final horror state. Repairs have to be initiated as soon as possible.

The reporter from anaedoonline.ng walked for over 20, swimming through disgusting hurdles of water, heap after heap of dirt gluing to her legs, she saw some stones she could climb temporarily to avoid the dirty water. These were shaky and relatively no better
