BBC List Aisha Yesufu In 100 Most Influential Women Globally

Nigerian activist and co-convener of the Bring Back Our Girls campaign, Aisha Yesufu has been listed amongst the BBC’s 100 inspiring and influential women from around the world for the year 2020.

Yesufu was listed alongside Sanna Marin who leads Finland’s all-female coalition government, Michelle Yeoh, star of the new Avatar and Marvel films, and Sarah Gilbert, who heads the Oxford University research into a coronavirus vaccine.

The Nigerian activist has been vocal against misgovernance and government oppression in the West African country.

At some point in the widespread #EndSARS protests, she was the face of the massive street processions, with many hailing her as a heroine for her role in pushing for police reforms.

Yeseufu was also recognised by Twitter as her handle was verified after many Nigerians pushed for her to be given the blue tick by the micro-blogging website.

According to the BBC, this year’s 100 Women list “is highlighting those who are leading change and making a difference during these turbulent times.”

Nigerians have been commenting on the list via social media. Ikechukwu Uka wrote on Twitter: “Well deserved, a lone voice in the desert.” Eyenidara Essien wrote:

“Congratulations to Aisha Yesufu. There is always a reward for consistency, perseverance and I pray for u that this is just the beginning.”

Saiki Muktar wrote: “Consistency. Advocacy. Bravery. Passion.” Tersoo Peters wrote: “Congratulations, it’s a well-deserved honour. May you continue to stand for the masses, even if tomorrow you are in government.”

Meanwhile, a coalition of civil society organisations in Nigeria has warned that the attacks on human rights activists are putting the country in a negative spotlight.

A statement released by the coalition said that since the beginning of the #EndSARS protests, the level of attacks on human rights activists has continued to rise.
