Maradona’s family and former teammates had seats reserved for them but the numbers increased as riot police could no longer contain the crowd.

And according to Argentine news outlet Clarin quoted by Goal, water cannons and teargas were used to disperse the crowd.

Video clips emerged on social media which showed how bottles and fences were launched near Maradona’s temporary place of rest.

The former Barcelona star will be laid to rest at the Jardines de Bella Vista cemetery on the outskirts of the city, which is understood to be where his parents were buried.

In the city of Naples, Seville and Barcelona, fans of the legendary player made makeshift shrines to pay tribute to him.

Maradona is survived by five children and his former wife, Claudia Villafane, who he divorced in 2004.
