CAF Confederation Cup: Kano Pillars, Rivers Utd Lose First Leg Tie

Nigeria’s representatives in the CAF Confederations Cup Kano Pillars and Rivers United both lost away in their first leg tie of the Preliminary Round on Saturday.

Pillars were defeated 3-1 in Dakar, Senegal by ASC Jaraaf after going ahead first, while Rivers lost 2-1 to Equatorial Guinea side Futuro Kings.

Pillars took the lead in the 12th minute through David Ibuka’s goal, but were quickly pegged back five mintes later after Zaky Bassene drew the hosts level.

With the home team settling in the game, Samba Diallo put them ahead in the 38th minute, giving them a 2-1 lead they took to half time.

With the game looking to end at 2-1, Lubasse Gulye increased the home side’s lead to make it 3-1 in the 80th minute, leaving Pillars with a tough task in the return leg

In Rivers’ game at the Estadio De Mongomo, the home side had to wait till the first half injury time before Nkama Gregoire put ahead, rising above everyone else to head the ball into the net.

The home side doubled their tally in the 68th minute before Godwin Aguda pulled one back for Rivers from the spot with 13 minutes left to play.

Both Nigerian sides will host their opponents in the second leg next weeked.

Meanwhile, Nigeria’s representatives in the Champions League Enyimba and Plateau United will open their accounts against Burkina Faso side Rahimo FC and Tanzanian side SC Simba respectively today (Sunday).

While Plateau host Simba, Enyimba are already in Ouagadougou to honour their tie.
