Enyimba Win, Plateau Utd Lose In CAF Champions League

Eighth-time Nigerian champions Enyimba kicked off their 2020/21 CAF Champions League campaign with a 1-0 win over Burkina Faso side, Rahimo FC, in Sunday’s first preliminary round – first leg tie in Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso while Plateau United lost 1-0 at home to Simba SC, Anaedoonline.ng reports.

Substitute Victor Mbaoma came on for Tosin Omoyele on the hour mark and grabbed the match-winner for the two-time CAF Champions League winners when he headed in Anayo Iwuala’s corner in the 76th minute of the encounter.

The win was Enyimba’s second in three games over Rahimo in over a year.

The Aba Elephants had defeated Rahimo 5-0 at the Aba Stadium in August 2019 and drew goalless in the reverse fixture in Ouagadougou.

Enyimba is the sole Nigerian team to have recorded a win in CAF inter-club competitions played over the weekend with Plateau United losing 1-0 to Tanzanian side, Simba FC, at the New Jos Stadium on Sunday.

Zambian midfielder, Clatous Chama, sealed the win for the Tanzanian side in the 58th minute to hand the visitors a crucial away win.

Plateau will travel to Dar es Salaam for the second leg of the preliminary round slated for December 4 to 6. A loss for Plateau United will see them crash out of the competition.

Kano Pillars and Rivers United also lost their opening fixtures on Saturday. Pillars lost 3-1 to Senegalese side Jaraaf FC while Rivers United also suffered a 2-1 loss to Futoro Kings.
