Lobby For Next Nnewi Teaching Hospital CMD Intensifies

Behind the scene, lobbying has intensified among candidates seeking to be appointed as the Chief Medical Director (CMD) of Nnamdi Azikiwe University Teaching Hospital (NAUTH), Nnewi.

Anaedonline.ng has reliably gathered that applications from interested and qualified candidates for the position will end on Friday, 15th January, 2021.

Insider sources in the hospital have revealed that although eleven (11) staff of Nnamdi Azikiwe Teaching Hospital, Nnewi, and many others outside the hospital have submitted their applications.

Some of the staff of the hospital who pleaded for anonymity while speaking to our correspondent revealed there is high level of politicking and lobbying going on for the top job of the hospital.

The hospital is dire need of a entirely new administrator and experienced professional to manage the hospital, some of the respondent’s claims.

According to one of the top staff of the hospital, any attempt to impose the next CMD of the hospital will be resisted, noting that all candidates must be subjected to examination.

“What happened the last time when the revered Prof. Obi Nwosu, was denied the position, after he came out tops in the screening exercise, must not be allowed to happen, he concluded.

Another insider that is conversant with developments in the race for the replacement of the outgoing Chief Medical Director (CMD) of Nnamdi Azikiwe University Teaching Hospital (NAUTH), Nnewi, Professor Anthony Igwegbe, told our correspondent that bearing any last minute changes, there are three (3) major candidates that are not leaving any stone unturned towards their bid to emerge the next CMD, emphasising the appointment has gone political.

Despite the intense politicking and lobbying among the candidates, according to a reliable source, the Federal Ministry of Health has a criteria for the appointment or emergence of any Chief Medical Director of Teaching Hospital.

“Apart from the judgment they make by Curriculum Vitae, they evaluate candidates based on qualifications, additional management trainings, publications and contributions to scientific knowledge, contributions to the teaching hospital, as well as the candidate’s vision and mission for the hospital.

It was further disclosed that in the written exams for the CMD position, candidates are asked professional questions, knowledge of Public Sector Rules and Financial Regulations and General knowledge. The exams take 60 % covering professional paper – 30%, Public Service Rules- 20% and General Paper- 10%.

Facts about the job of a Chief Medical Director (CMD)

The Chief Medical Director is the Head and Chief Executive of the hospitals . He/she is accountable to the Board of Management and the Honourable Minister of Health.

The Chief Medical Director is charged with the responsibility for the execution of policies and matters affecting the day-to-day management of the affairs of the Hospital.

Anaedoonline.ng learnt that the interested candidates must meet the following requirement;

1. Applicant must be Medical or Dental practitioner registered with the Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria of not less than twelve (12) years post qualification.

2. Applicant must be fellows of either the National Postgraduate Medical College of Nigeria or West African Postgraduate Medical College or its equivalent registerable by the Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria.

3. Candidates must have been Consultants for a minimum of five (5) years.

4. Candidates must be medically fit.

5. He/She must be of proven good character and integrity.

6. Evidence of Medical research is an added advantage; Administrative qualification and experience is an added advantage.

7. Knowledge of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) is an added advantage.
