Northern Governors And The Challenges Of Insecurity

Without mincing words, there is no part of Nigeria that is not affected by the ravaging impact of insecurity across the country today. There is however no gainsaying the fact that northern Nigeria is the worst hit.

The irony of it all is the undeniable reality that the dastardly act is mainly perpetrated by the northerners under different nomenclatures: Boko Haram, banditry, kidnapping, Fulani herdsmen murderous activities etc. It should be clearly understood that I am not trying to exonerate any tribe completely from the unfortunate act.

At this juncture, I commend the boldness and statesmanship of the Sultan of Sokoto who sometime ago called a spade a spade by saying available records showed that most of the kidnappings in Nigeria are perpetrated by the nomadic Fulani herdsmen.

It would amount to a milestone towards resolution and finding lasting solutions to the crisis if the northern governors could talk in unison condemning the absolutely condemnable act traced to their kinsmen as the main perpetrators. Why would the Fulani, with the most inconvenient nomadic lifestyle, not embrace peace with the host communities?

Fine, relevant constitutional provisions guarantee the freedom of legitimate Nigerians to reside and work in any part of the country based on individual choice. But, the question is, has the same constitutional right provided for heartless killings of the hosts who are generous enough to accommodate people from other tribes? The answer is no.

Have we heard of people from South going to the North to constitute such a nuisance and threats to life? No. Southerners dare not try that nonsense in the North. We all know that natural desert encroachment coupled with poor vegetation is not favourable to the herdsmen vis-a-vis their nomadic lifestyles.

Agreed. Why on earth should the Fulani herdsmen abuse the hand of fellowship extended to them by the host communities? It is purely unheard of and completely inhumane. It is embarrassing that some individuals are saying the criminal herdsmen are non-Nigerians residing in the southern bushes.

Didn’t we read some time ago when a statement credited to the power that be revealed Fulani from other African countries like Niger, Mali, Chad etc are our brothers who should be allowed to move freely down to Nigeria, live and go about doing their businesses?

At this point comes to mind the policy of Visa on Arrival. What, in the real sense of it, has Nigeria gained from the needless policy other than the criminal activities brought in by the so-called visitors?

I read Governor Bala Mohammed of Bauchi State recently justifying that AK 47 rifles being carried along by Fulani herdsmen are for self-defence. He equally castigated his southern counterparts for making moves to rid their forests of criminal elements.

That to me amounts to being economical with the true position of things. On the worrisome security situation, the entire nation is presently at a crossroads where we cannot shy away from the reality and plain truth. The known forces and evil perpetrators behind insecurity all over the places should be condemned by all and sundry.

Attempts to find lasting solutions to insecurity that is threatening the unity and existence of Nigeria as nation will remain an optical illusion if those in power who should condemn the condemnable evil doings turn out to justify and defend the dastardly acts.
