Former Super Eagles stars Ike Shorunmu and Edema Fuludu have urged Super Eagles coach Gernot Rohr to consider players from the Nigerian Professional Football League in his squad for next month’s 2021 AFCON qualifiers against Benin Republic and Lesotho.

After the Eagles’ 4-4 draw against Sierra Leone at the Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium, Benin City, and the goalless stalemate in the reverse fixture in Freetown, eyebrows were raised over Rohr’s exclusion of the home-based players from his side.

Former Eagles goalkeeper Shorunmu said, “It will be good if the manager extends an invitation to some of the NPFL players, especially for some of them who have played continental games recently.”

Edema Fuludu, a member of the 1994 AFCON-winning Eagles side, said, “Rohr is the boss here and he takes the final decision for the team.

“However, I believe that NPFL players deserve their chances in the Eagles too.

“We have skilful and talented players in our league. There are good ones in the league who if given opportunities will excel,” Fuludu said.
