The Anambra State Government has established a caretaker committee for Uruagu, Nnewi in Nnewi North Local Government Area of Anambra State to avert what many are beginning to tag Nnewi crisis.

The caretaker committee was inaugurated on Sunday 28th, February, 2021, by the Transition Committee Chairman of Nnewi North Local Government Area, Rt. Hon. Prince Engr. Chukwudi Orizu.

Inaugurating the caretaker committee at Obi-Uruagu Palace, Prince Chukwudi Orizu stated that due to the inability of the community to conduct a free and fair election of new executives of Uruagu-Nnewi Community Development Union and the need to avoid a leadership vacuum in the community, the Government of Anambra State approved the setting up of a caretaker committee to run the affairs of the town for the next three months, effective from February 28th, 2021.

He noted that the new caretaker committee is expected to convene meetings between the disputing parties and relevant stakeholders to resolve the problems plaguing the union which has frustrated the smooth conduct of the earlier scheduled election.

1. Arthur Ngwube – Chairman
2. Mr. Paul Obiorah – Secretary
3. Mr. Edwin Okonkwo – Member
4. Mr. Patrick Atueyi – Member
5. Mr. Obiorah – Member.

The former lawmaker charged the committee to conduct peaceful and credible elections into the Uruagu-Nnewi Community Development Executives on or before the expiration of their three (3) months tenure, noting that the members of Uruagu-Nnewi Development Union Interim Committee must ensure that “Outside Observers” or an “Election Monitoring Team” is invited to oversee or supervise the election process and avoid a crisis in Nnewi.

The inauguration of the caretaker committee has brought to an end the Hon. Charlie Nwonye led Uruagu-Nnewi Community Development Union. In the same vein, it has thrust Arthur Ngwube into the limelight. Time shall tell if his committee would hold a fair election, hand over to a substantive government, and quietly leave. Or not.
