JUST IN: Senate Confirms Appointment of Service Chiefs

The Nigerian Senate has concluded the confirmation of the new Service Chiefs in their different portfolio. This came in the heels of the Committee on Defence recommendation for their confirmation after reviewing their status following hearings.

This confirmation is the second leg and final confirmation in a journey that began last week when the lower chamber, the House of Representatives gave a go-ahead for their appointment, pushing the ball to the court of the upper chamber.

Ahmad Lawan, the Senate President last Wednesday referred the request of President Muhammadu Buhari for confirmation of the new service chiefs, to the Committee on Defence. Lawan gave the committee led by Senator Aliyu Wamakko, two weeks to carry out their assignments and report to the Senate in plenary.

The Senate confirmed their appointments at the committee of the whole and at plenary on Tuesday following the Wamakko report’s consideration.

Recall that the Nigerian Senate demanded the sack of the former Military chiefs due to the rise in insecurity all over the nation, especially the Northern part of the country.

The new service chiefs are listed thus: Maj. Gen. Lucky Eluonye Onyenuchea lrabor as Chief of Defence Staff, Maj. Gen. Ibrahim Attahiru (Chief of Army Staff), Rear Admiral Awwal Zubairu Gambo, (Chief of Naval Staff), and Air Vice Marshal Isiaka O. Amao as Chief of Air staff.

Lawan asked the new Military chiefs to take the war to the bandits and insurgents and dislodge them in their strongholds.

In a related story, the Northern Governors Forum welcomed the appointment of new Service Chiefs by President Muhammadu Buhari. It also commended the outgone military heads for giving their best in the service of the nation.

Update: Reps Confirm New Service Chiefs

Chairman of the Forum and Governor of Plateau State Simon Bako Lalong, in a statement, hailed the President for taking the decision and asked the new military heads to put in their best not only to meet the expectations of the Commander-in-Chief but also that of Nigerians who have high expectations for enhanced security and safety of lives and properties.
