Manchester United forward, Marcus Rashford, told Harry Maguire to “shut up” as emotions got the better of them, during the 0-0 draw with Crystal Palace on Wednesday.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s men put up a laboured performance as they dropped points at Selhurst Park. The result means the Red Devils are now 14 points behind Premier League leaders Manchester City.

Tensions between United’s players were evident during the second half, as they struggled to create clear-cut chances against Palace.

And in the 69th minute, Rashford lost his temper with Maguire after the United captain criticised him for failing to stay onside during an attacking move.

Maguire, who had headed the ball forward, told Rashford to “f***ing stay onside”. Rashford snapped back at Maguire with: “Shut the f*** up, f***ing nobhead.”

Meanwhile, Manchester United manager, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, has said he left David de Gea out of his squad for the 0-0 draw with Crystal Palace because of “personal reasons”.

Solskjaer gave Dean Henderson a rare start in the Premier League at Selhurst Park.

Henderson went on to make a key save late in the game to preserve a point, denying Patrick van Aanholt in the game’s final moments.

When asked about De Gea’s absence from the squad prior to the game, Solskjaer told MUTV: “That’s personal reasons.”

After the match, Solskjaer would not be drawn on any more details. Asked by Sky Sports when De Gea would return, he said: “That’s a private matter. It’ll take the time it takes.”

Solskjaer noted that it would have been a different result altogether without the young goalkeeper’s effort.

The manager further said that his side had the disappointing draw because they lacked the tempo and quality during the match.

United remain in second place with a point ahead of third-place Leicester City who also drew 1-1 at Burnley. Solskjaer’s side are now 14 points behind city rivals Manchester City.

“Sometimes it’s human nature, sometimes you don’t work at your best and today we didn’t unfortunately. It’s been a long season…” Solskjaer told the press after the game.

“I’m not going to put any blame on that because everyone has got the same season. That’s part of it.

“You’re playing against a good team that make you play the way they want you to at times and when you don’t have the quality and tempo we should have had.”

On Dean’s performance, he added, “That’s [how it is for] a Man United goalkeeper sometimes, you have to keep your concentration and he’s growing into that position.

“It was a great save, I didn’t know if the player was off [side] or not, but Dean showed good concentration and good reactions so I thank him for one point and not zero, well done.
