What Obiano Said About Alleged ‘Falling Bridge’ In Anambra

Governor Willie Obiano of Anambra State, on Thursday, dispelled rumours making the round that one of the three flyover bridges he built and named legacy projects located along Enugu-Onitsha expressway was collapsing.

Obiano who spoke through the State Commissioner for Works, Engr Marcel Ifejiofor, during a Thursday morning, inspection tour said the popular Aroma flyover is strong and safe, contrary to the insinuations on social media that the bridge was collapsing.

He said that the alleged cracks being posted around as a sign that the bridge was collapsing had nothing to do with the integrity of the bridge, as it remains solid.

He said the Aroma bridge was built to a global standard, and the expansion is an intrinsic part of bridge construction and does not indicate a crack.

“The three flyover bridges at Aroma, Kwatta and Amawbia were awarded in 2014 and 2015 and remain safe not to mention the fifteen other bridges built across the state by the Obiano administration, the Commissioner added.

He assured the Anambra people of the commitment of Governor Obiano to the safety of lives at all times.

The Construction Manager of IDC, Yousssef Zghaib, who handled the project, said that the embankment and the bridge are separate units and assured that there is no cause for alarm.

However, the Federal Government has assured Nigerians that the on-going second Niger bridge will be completed before the year 2022.

The Minister of Labour and Employment, Dr Chris Ngige, in an interview re-assured citizens that all things been equal, it will be a dream come true.

Work is ongoing on the 2nd Niger Bridge. The contractor gave an undertaking to deliver the project before 2022 which is the appointed date, I believe him because they’re working day and night. Apart from the little hiccups occasioned by demands for compensation, they’re on schedule.

The job is about 45 per cent complete and the fund for the construction is available. That is the good news for the people of the South-East. The cost of the bridge from the exit route of Delta and the South-East; South-South is about N336bn, and the money is available unlike the Obasanjo/Jonathan arrangement when they were trying to look for Private Public Partnership.
