Manchester United have defeated City rivals Manchester City 2-0 in an English Premier League game played at the Etihad Stadium on Sunday.

United opened scoring in the second minute of the game after Anthony Martial was brought down in the box by Gabriel Jesus barely a minute into the derby.

The penalty was converted by Bruno Fernandes despite a touch by goalkeeper Ederson.

City took over possession a few minutes after the opening goal but failed to find the back of the net.

In the 50th minute, United double their lead with Luke Shaw finding the back of the net from a Marcus Rashford assist.

The win moves United to second position with 54 points while City remain at the top of the Premier League table with 65 points.

United host West Ham at home in their next EPL game after a Europa League encounter against AC Milan, while City welcome Southampton.

Manchester United boss, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, has singled out Anthony Martial and Luke Shaw for praise following his side’s 2-0 win over Manchester City in Sunday’s Premier League derby at Etihad.

According to Solskjaer, both Martial and Shaw were fantastic against Man City during the encounter. Man United ended Man City’s long unbeaten run, thanks to goals from Bruno Fernandes and Shaw.

The result means Man United are now 11 points behind Pep Guardiola’s side on the Premier League table.

“I thought Anthony was absolutely superb today. He was more of the Anthony of old,” Solskjaer told Sky Sports after the game.

“He turns, gets hold of it, and to think he was a doubt this morning! Until two hours before the game, until after the warm-up, to be fair, I wasn’t sure if he was going to play or not. So fantastic. That was the same with Luke.”

Man United’s next fixture is against AC Milan in the Europa League on Thursday.
