Families who lost loved ones during the EndSars protest across Nigeria have continued to reel in pains. The protest was held following an increasing wave of police brutality in the country.

Narrating how her son, Obi Chinedu was killed on the 21st of October, Esther said he had left home that morning to finalise a deal with a certain company to help them fix some of their cars.

She said he had started making plans to rent a new house for his family because anytime it rains, it falls on them and when there is intense sun, they can’t stay inside the house because it is constructed with Zinc sheets.

“He told me that he wanted to see if the company can pay him some money and he will go and look for another place for us and we were all happy” she said.

Not long after Obi left home, his mother got a call from where he was working informing her that he had been shot and killed by a policeman.

Those who called said Obi didn’t take part in the protest but he was shot in his chest and they rushed him to Ntasi Obi, a private hospital owned by the Catholic Church.

“When we got there, they told us that my son tried and that he wanted to live. The doctor told us that my son said he remembered everything we had discussed and that he wanted to live, but that where he was shot was bad. He took us to the Mortuary in the same hospital and we saw my son lying dead. Indeed, it was true”. she said, tears beginning to well up in her eyes.

Obi was the reason why his family could feed. The first child in a family of four, he was only six when his father died and since then, it became the responsibility of his mother to take care of him and his other siblings.

“I struggled to train him as a mechanic with the hope that he will change our story someday. Now, they have killed him. I don’t know where to start from” she said.

To feed her family now, she does dry cleaning for people and what she earns is hardly enough for her and her children.

“That is the only way we eat now. My other children have since stopped going to school because there is no money. He has been the one taking care of our bills” she explained.

She says the government needs to step in and help her family as the death of her son has created a huge vacuum for her.
