Prince Philip, the Duke of Edinburg and husband of Queen Elizabeth II is dead. He passed away on Friday, 9th April 2021. This news broke around 11 am GMT (12 pm Nigerian time) when numerous international news agencies, including the BBC, began to report it.

Born on June 10, 1921, on the Greek island of Corfu, he was the only son of Prince Andrew of Greece and Denmark, and Princess Alice of Battenberg. Greece’s king, Philip’s uncle, was forced to abdicate when Philip was a baby, and the family fled to Paris, France.

At age 7, he moved to England, where he lived at Kensington Palace. Philip lived there with his paternal grandmother, Victoria Mountbatten, and later attended Gordonstoun, a boarding school in Scotland.

At 18, Philip took up British citizen and joined the Royal Navy and graduated from the Britannia Royal Naval College as a top cadet. He saw active duty from the Indian Ocean to the Mediterranean, and in 1945 at the end of World War II, he was in Tokyo Bay when the Japanese surrendered.

Phillip married Elizabeth on November 20, 1947, in a ceremony that was listened to on radio worldwide by a record 200 million people.

The media has always given Phillip credit for helping steady the ship and gave Elizabeth’s leadership an anchor when she took over in the period when England was still suffering from the recession caused by the second world war.

“I, and his whole family, and this and many other countries, owe him a debt greater than he would ever claim or we shall ever know,” she once said of him.

Prince Philip was 99 years old. He would have been 100 years old in June.

Philip spent 65 years supporting the queen and became the longest-serving consort in history. He retired from his public role in 2017 and staying largely out of the view since. But he made news in 2019 when he crashed his car. He was shaken but unhurt. This incidence showed he was still of active mind and body.

Buckingham Palace has now released a statement which read:

“It is with deep sorrow that Her Majesty The Queen has announced the death of her beloved husband, His Royal Highness Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh. His Royal Highness passed away peacefully this morning at Windsor Castle.”
