A Nnewi youth stakeholder, Ebuka Onyekweru, a public affairs analyst has reacted to the purported calls by some Nnewi elders that the leading aspirant in the race for the ticket of the All Progressive Grand Alliance, APGA, and the member representing Nnewi North in the State Assembly to step down. His position is clear: it is an open contest and the Nonso Smart Okafor’s candidature is backed by fair play, equity, and his massive support base.

Here’s the stakeholder’s statement in full:

“The disturbing development in Nnewi, where some elders will sit down and ditch out their whims, make the same appear as the will of Nnewi people is most uncharitable.

“Before it gets to where young men and women will take it up squarely against them, they should respect themselves and stop this infuriating behaviour of trying to make their personal opinions look like the will of Nnewi people.

“I hereby vehemently condemn in the strongest possible term, the meeting hosted by Chief Dan Ulasi where one of the participants purportedly told Hon. Nonso Okafor to wait and contest for governorship in about 20 years’ time.

“What was that supposed to mean? We all know nobody has the power to choose the set time of his success. Yet we know that everything is bound by time.

“In 20 years, Smart Nonso would be not less than 60 years. That singular comment, therefore, is against good conscience, fairness and natural justice. A slap on the ambitions of young people. Indeed, it is a very unfortunate development.

“The alleged decision by a few wealthy Nnewi sons present at the meeting, some of whom denounced all APGA aspirants from Nnewi, is regrettable and condemned.

“It is a free and open contest where all qualified adults are empowered by law to test the political waters.

“Those involved in this charade must desist from it and act statesmanlike, as expected of elders.”
