Delta State To Host 2022 National Sports Festival

Winners of the 2020 National Sports Festival, Delta State, will host the next edition of the festival in 2022. The Minister of Youth and Sports Development, Sunday Dare, announced this while declaring the 20th edition of the festival tagged ‘Edo 2020’ closed on Wednesday.

He said, “Congratulations to Delta State for emerging the overall winner of the Games of the 2020 National sports Festival.

“I’m glad to note that the Federal Government received bids to host the 21st edition of the National Sports Festival in 2022 from 6 states namely: Delta, Ebonyi, Imo, Kaduna, Kano, and Ogun.

“Following the evaluation of the bids and the physical visitation to the prospective States, I hereby announce Delta State as the next host of the National Sports Festival in 2022.

“I congratulate the government and people of Delta State for emerging the preferred State and wish them best of luck in the organisation of the 21st National Sports Festival.”

Anaedoonline.ng Team Delta have become the first team to win six straight National Sports Festival.

The latest feat was the 20th edition which was held in Edo State, the festival kicked off on April 2 and ended on April 14.

On the other hand, Team Edo came second with 129 gold, 104 silver, and 108 bronze while Team Bayelsa finished a third with 56 gold, 55 silver, and 58 bronze.

Delta emerged as the champions of the competition with after raking in a total of 158 gold, 116 silver, and 110 bronze.

Delta wins 19th National Sports Festival with 352 medals

The state that came fourth in the 12-day event is Rivers with 33 gold, 34 silver, and 61 bronze after which Lagos took the fifth position with 32 gold, 40 silver, 54 bronze; Oyo sixth – 31 gold, 30 silver, 42 bronze.

While Akwa Ibom emerged the seventh position with 20 gold, 24 silver, and 44 bronze, Akwa, Ogun followed next with 16 gold, 23 silver, 39 bronze to emerge eighth.

Kano took the ninth position with 11 gold, 22 silver, 33 bronze, and Imo took 10th place with 10 gold, 13 silver, and 26 bronze.

Recall, last year, after 10 days of Sporting fiesta in the Nation’s capital, Abuja, Delta State has been finally announced as the winner of the 19th National Sports Festival.

U-23: We’ll Play Like Real Champions In Egypt – Nwakali

Team Delta claimed unimaginable 163 gold medals, 88 silver and 101 bronze medals to beat the other participating teams to the number one position after 10 days of action in Abuja.

While this is the fifth time Delta will be coming first at the National Sports Festival, this is their best showing going by the number of medals they won in total.

Interestingly, Delta State first won the festival when Abuja hosted the biennial games in 2004.

At this year’s festival, Rivers State finished second with 69 gold, 58 silver and 57 bronze medals.

Edo State finished third with 47 gold, 41 silver and 53 bronze medals, followed by Team Lagos that finished in the fourth position.

17 STATES YET TO WIN MEDALS AT THE ONGOING

Team Lagos got a total 146 medals with a breakdown showing 36 gold, 37 silver and 73 bronze medals. Host, Abuja finished 7th. They hauled 21 gold, 9 silver and 24 bronze medals.
