The Nnewi Traders Association under the leadership of Chief Edward Muozom has collectively come up with a donation of 500 thousand naira for the Tanker Driver who offered his vehicle free of charge to fight the fire incident that engulfed the Timber Shed sometimes ago.

It would be recalled that the Timber shed was gutted by a ravaging inferno a few months ago where goods, properties, and machinery worth millions of naira were destroyed. The painful aspect of it was that a good Samaritan who offered his Water Tanker to the Traders became the worst-hit victim, as his vehicle was not only completely burned but he was equally injured by the fire.

Since the incident, the Tanker Driver has been rendered jobless and helpless. It was in the light of this that the Traders decided to assist the man. Speaking to Anaedoonline, the Chairman of all Chairmen of Nnewi Traders, Chief Edward Mouzom has this to say: “Sometimes ago, this market caught fire and rendered a lot of people useless including one man who came to help.”

“Incidentally,” he continued, “his vehicle was completely burned. It was by the grace of God that the man was saved because he was partly burned. During the incident, the Honourable Commissioner and other top Government Officials came to witness what happened.”

He, therefore, pointed that: “We the Traders in Nnewi came together and agreed that the man needs to be compensated and that is why, today, instead of waiting endlessly for the Government, we have decided to do something on our own.

We are doing this because we don’t know if the man has any other thing doing. Given the way things are in Nigeria, we thought it wise to come up with something to assist the man in order to buy another vehicle or start something to make sure he is able to feed his family. This is why all the Traders in Nnewi came together to contribute their widow’s mite as a form of compensation for him to start life afresh.

Anambra Assembly called for an investigation of Timber Market fire

At the same time, we are asking the Government to take a critical look into the fire incident that engulfed the Timber shed Nnewi and see what they can do to assist them. They need Government help one way or the other. So, today, we have invited the man to hand over the 500,000 we all contributed to enabling him to continue with life”.

On the 500 thousand naira, he emphasized that the money did not come from Government, but the contribution of all Nnewi Traders Association. saying that all the Traders in Nnewi put their heads together to gather the money as their appreciation for the huge sacrifice he made.

In his comment, the Chairman of Timber Dealers Association, Mr. Nnedu stated that he is very happy over what the Nnewi Traders Association has done and called on the Almighty God to bless them. He equally used the opportunity to call on the Government to come to their aid and do whatever they can do to ameliorate the suffering of the Traders, many of whom have not been able to find their feet since the ugly incident.

A fairly used water tanker, according to prices on Jiji.ng, can go for as much as 12 million naira. The 500 thousand naira gesture to the tnak driver who lost his vehicle to the fire may not be a life-changing sum, after all. Perhaps it is a good starting point.
