Students of Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University, COOU, formerly Anambra State University, ANSU, are out, today, 20th May 2021, on the main campus in Uli protesting. Their grievance is singular – the SUG elections. They are angry over what they insist to be a malicious move, pre-election to deny the candidatures of certain candidates and what on election day was outright election fixing.

Some of the protesters who spoke to Anaedoonline said there are three requirements to contest for SUG presidency. One, having 3.7 CGPA and above; two, not being a cultist; three, having complete school fees payment. Of the five candidates gunning for the presidency of COOU SUG, not one of them fell short of any of these requirements. This would normally mean that there would be five contestants on the ballot.

But the situation is not normal as feelers from the university point out. “Just late last night,” a student lamented, “the electoral committee came up with a new reason that the aspirants were disqualified on the grounds of industrial training.”

With this, only person is cleared to contest the election unopposed. Here’s the twist. Last year, the electoral body postponed the election on the basis that one person cannot stand for the presidency.

At the time of writing this, neither the school authorities nor the electoral body has responded to this protest nor addressed the students. The protest is still ongoing and we would update this story.
