Three University Students Expelled For Gang Raping A Colleague

The Ignatius Ajuru University of Education, Port Harcourt, has expelled six of its students for a handful of different offences, with three of them kicked out for the gang rape of a female student in one of the school’s hostels.

The Vice-Chancellor of the institution, Prof. Ndimele Ozo-Mekuri, made this known in a statement made available to journalists in Port Harcourt on Wednesday, 26th May 2021. In the statement titled “Expulsion from the university”, Prof. Ozo-Mekuri pointed out that the three that were expelled after they were found culpable of rape allegations have their case referred to the school disciplinary committee.

Here is the part of the statement that made reference to the rape offenders.

“The Senate of Ignatius Ajuru University of Education has expelled the following students from the University for various offences:

“Mr. Nnamdi Destiny – UE/2018/POL.SC/BSc4/0062 – Political Science – involved in gang rape of a female student in the hostel.

“Mr. Samuel Valentine – UE/2017/POL.SC/BSc4/2059 – Political Science – involved in gang rape of a female student in the hostel.
“Mr. Chukwuemeka Amajuoyi – UE/THA/BA4/0019 – Theatre and Film Studies – involved in gang rape of a female student in the hostel.”

The other part of the statement that is unrelated to the rape allegations read thus:

“Mr. Bekwele Ogbondah Godspower – UE/ACCT/B.ED4/0100 – Accounting Department, who defrauded fellow students of their school fees and issued them fake online University receipts.

“The majority of the victims in Level 100 in the 2019/2020 session lost their admission.

“Mr. Linus Hans – UE/2018/BSc.Ed4/0525 – Accounting Department, for sealing a fellow student’s phone.

A human rights group, the Centre for Basic Rights Protection and Accountability Campaign praised the senate of the university of education for taking the step of expelling the students who gang raped a fellow student.

The group’s leader, Women Mobilization, Uzoma Kelechi, made the position of the group known in a statement: She said the university leadership has shown that issues of sexual violence would not be tolerated in the school.

Kelechi said Ignatius Ajuru University the institution has restored public confidence by making sure that the appropriate penalty was meted out to perpetrators of sexual crime.

“This action by the institution is a bold statement and it would serve as a deterrent to others. We also commend the VC for keeping to his words of ensuring justice for the rape victim,” she concluded.

The rape incidence happened in October 2020.
