Nigerians on Twitter have faulted the proposed approach of the President, Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retd) towards the ongoing unrest in the South-Eastern part of the country.

Anaedoonline.ng reported that dozens of police facilities and establishments belonging to the Independent National Electoral Commission have been set ablaze by hoodlums, while many police officers have been killed during similar attacks.

This comes amidst chants for self-actualization from a secessionist group identified as the Indigenous Peoples of Biafra who have reignited and intensified their calls for a breakaway Biafra Nation.

This was followed by another assassination of a former judge of the Enugu State High Court, Justice Stanley Nnaji by unknown gunmen on Sunday, June 30.

However, during a meeting with the Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission, Mahmood Yakubu; and other electoral commissioners in Aso Villa, Abuja, on Tuesday, Buhari stated that his government will ensure it does everything possible to stop those who want to destroy his administration to fail.

“…Whoever wants the destruction of the system will soon have the shock of their lives. We’ve given them enough time. I received a briefing today from the Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission, on the series of attacks on their facilities nationwide. These attacks are totally unacceptable, and we will not allow those behind them to achieve their evil objectives.

Femi Falana: Some Nigerian States Are Already Fighting Civil War

“In the area of security, we have changed the Service Chiefs and the Inspector-General, and we are demanding that they rise fully to the challenges confronting us. There must be zero tolerance for all those bent on destroying our country by promoting crime and insurrection!

“For those of us who are unfortunately in the fields for 30 months of the Civil War, to see the carnage of how we killed ourselves, at least a million people. I think those that are misbehaving are either children, they don’t know what happened, but for those of us who went through all these things, we can’t understand, but we will treat them in the language they understand.”

The president scathing remark has received backlash on Twitter with the topic ‘Buhari’ currently in the top three trends on the app.

Popular influencer and legal practitioner, Segun Awosanya – @segalink said, “This is unfortunate. Even though the President may not understand the implication as he didn’t tweet it himself, the severely uneducated sub-literate that tweeted & those that approved this for public consumption, at a time like this, are part of the problem of this admin.”

Meanwhile, one user, @ekpesfrancis thinks that “President Buhari spoke from his heart & no one could write this for him, He didn’t mention any ethnic group but threatened CRIMINALS. If you felt threatened, it’s either you’re a CRIMINAL or an ENEMY of Nigeria, guess what? you’ll be shocked! “Who get pikin make e hold am”

However, another tweep, @chosensomto, thinks that Anambra State Governor, Willie Obiano and lawmakers should call for Buhari’s impeachment for the statement he made.

He wrote: “If I were the Governor of Anambra state, heaven knows the National Assembly members from my state will receive motivation from me to move for Buhari’s impeachment. The Presidency is a threat to your state security. Challenge them!”

But @The_NParadigm backed the president, by saying that “They demand that government should raise up and defend citizens! That insecurity is Buhari’s fault. Just a single statement. The narrative is now he wants to kill S.Easterners. We cannot solve problems with the same thinking we used when creating them!”

One user @ElochukwuOgahi wrote: “Fulani herdsmen have been killing people in the entire Nigeria, and no one brought shock to them. Fulani herdsmen just killed more than 100 people just last week in Ebonyi and Benue and nothing happened to them. But late Buhari have suddenly declared war against #Biafra”

Buhari Must Come Out To Condemn Herdsmen Violence – Abaribe

Another Tweep, @Drelmoatiku said, “The genocidal intent of President Buhari against the Igbo nation should be condemned by every Nigerian. It is unacceptable. Buhari should know that 2021 is different from 1967-70. He must act and speak like a president, a father of all, and not like a motor park tout.”

@OziboOfficial noted that “The problem with Buhari is that people that surrounded him are not telling him the truth, He neither reads nor writes, he neither speaks nor listens to news, he doesn’t type on his phone. That’s why he treats Boko Haram & bandits better than the citizens he swore an oath 2 protect.”

In the same vein, @Oye440 accused Buhari of bias by saying that “Obasanjo was precise with his instructions and OPC being a Yoruba militia from where Obasanjo himself hail from. Can President Buhari be this precise on Bokoharam, Fulani Armed herdsmen or Bandits on rampage? There’s partiality in his statement which is always the problem.”
