A little good news won’t hurt anyone. In fact, it would be a welcome item among the plethora of bad news coming from all quarters of the country. Today, 3rd June 2021, AnaedoOnline can authoritatively confirm that Kanu Heart Foundation, a brainchild of Super Eagles ex-captain and legend, Nwankwo Kanu, has saved the lives of 550 children.

Kanu Heart Foundation was established in the year 2000 with a simple agenda, to treat children with cardiac defects in and outside Nigeria but especially in Nigeria. Kanu founded this non-profit organization after he underwent heart surgery that could have killed him if he wasn’t rich and famous.

Kanu’s surgery happened in November 1996 which was a few months after captaining Nigeria to Olympic gold in Atlanta, Georgia, USA. He didn’t play football for a year after this. BBC reported that in 2014, Kanu had a corrective heart surgery in the United States.

In order to give indigent children with cardiac diseases fighting chances, the foundation was created.

Today, the foundation has spent a total of 4.2 million dollars which is about 2.1 billion naira in today’s exchange rate. This amounts to spending nearly four million naira on one child.

An expensive venture, this was begun by Kanu’s personal fund but now run by donations.

The foundation is 21 years old meaning they have saved the lives of at least 26 children every single year. Most of the surgeries and treatments these children get come from abroad. The Foundation is working to make this easier for them in order to save money and save more lives.

According to Pastor Onyebuchi Abia, the Cordinator of KHF, the Foundation is not stopping at helping to pay for children’s cardiac treatments, they are gunning to build their own “ultra-modern” Cardiac Centre in Abuja. The first of its kind, this facility is expected to perform not less than 250 open heart surgeries per year.
