Unknown Gunmen Enter Nnewi, Shoot In The Air

The menace of unknown gunmen that has become, nearly, a daily occurrence in towns and cities across the Southeast has reached Nnewi. Nnewi (and its environs) has been largely spared of the nefarious activities of these unknown gunmen but this looked to be over this evening.

Anaedoonline can authoritatively report that unknown gunmen entered Nnewi town at about 5.45 pm, today the 3rd of June 2021, driven into town in two black Sienna buses, dressed in all black.

Driving buses is not strange to Nnewi city. Being dressed in black may be suspicious but ignorable, but shooting in Nnewi is rare. This was what happened at the Nnewi Roundabout. These unknown men released a round of gunshots into the air.

The panic that followed this shooting saw motorists and other road users speed off or flee in terror. No one was hurt. In fact, it seemed that the unknown gunmen only wanted to clear the road for a quick passage.

With the roads cleared, these unknown gunmen drove toward Nnobi Road – Nnobi Road could take them to many places as close as Awka-Etiti and as far as Enugu. Nobody can say for sure where they headed to.

The tension these unknown gunmen left behind has generated all kinds of rumours in the commercial city of Nnewi. One of them is that soldiers were out in town picking up random young men by see around. This caused men and women and children running for cover at the approach of any military van or military-looking van.

It has also been said that there was a curfew in place for the night. This we can’t confirm but we are aware that vehicles have continued to ply the roads of the city.

A few more gunshots have been reported by residents around Old Onitsha Road.

We have now reached out to the police and the Nzukora-run vigilante security for their comments. We have not been successful so far. This post might be updated.
